We are seeking an experienced and knowledgeable Certified Safety Manager to join our team. This position will play an important role in maintaining a strong safety culture across our offices, field operations, and project sites. We are looking for this individual's home office to be out of our Blacksburg or Lynchburg office.

The Safety Manager will develop and implement safety programs, identify and mitigate workplace and job-site hazards, conduct field audits, provide employee training, and ensure compliance with OSHA and other applicable regulations. This position will work closely with employees, project managers, and leadership at all levels of the organization to promote safe working practices and continuously improve our safety program.

• Serve as a safety business partner to all levels of the organization, helping mitigate risk and strengthen the company’s safety culture.
• Develop, implement, and maintain company safety programs, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
• Identify, analyze, and control occupational hazards in both office and field environments.
• Serve as Hurt & Proffitt’s in-house safety resource and liaison for OSHA and NIOSH requirements.
• Conduct regular field site inspections and safety audits to identify hazards and ensure compliance.
• Provide guidance and direction for Site Safety Plans and Hazard Analyses, working with project managers and team leaders to ensure accurate and timely completion and delivery to clients.
• Develop and deliver safety training programs covering safe work practices, equipment operation, emergency procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.
• Maintain accurate safety records, logs, site plans, OSHA logs, and other required documentation.
• Investigate workplace incidents and accidents, document findings, analyze trends, and recommend corrective actions.
• Prepare and submit accident and incident reports in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements.
• Manage Workers’ Compensation cases and related documentation.
• Manage the employee drug screening program.
• Review occupational safety policies and standards and recommend changes when necessary.
• Promote a positive, proactive, and safety-focused work environment throughout the organization.
• Perform other safety-related duties as needed.

The successful candidate will have comprehensive knowledge of safety and environmental concepts and principles, with the ability to analyze hazards, develop effective safety processes, and educate employees on safe work practices.

The Safety Manager should have working and teaching knowledge of:

• Fall Protection Standards
• Hazard Communication
• Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
• First Aid/CPR/AED
• Trench Shoring
• Confined Space
• Crane Safety
• Respiratory Protection
• Bloodborne Pathogens
• HAZWOPER

Candidates must have:

• OSHA 30 certification, plus one of the following:
  • ASP – Associate Safety Professional certification through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, with an associate or bachelor’s degree and at least one year of safety, health, or environmental work experience; or
  • CSP – Certified Safety Professional certification through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, with a bachelor’s degree or higher and at least four years of safety, health, or environmental work experience.
• Strong written, verbal, presentation, and training skills.
• Ability to work professionally and positively with employees at all levels of the organization.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to identify safety hazards, evaluate risk, and recommend practical solutions.
• Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with project managers, team leaders, and company leadership.
• A valid driver’s license in good standing with a minimum of three years of licensed driving experience.

Preferred

• Previous safety experience in engineering, surveying, construction, or a related field.

This position operates in both a professional office environment and outdoors at project sites.

Office responsibilities will involve standard equipment such as computers, telephones, copiers, and other office technology. Field responsibilities may involve lifting equipment, standing, bending, stooping, walking over uneven or uncertain terrain, and climbing as necessary.

The position may involve exposure to soil, water, hazardous materials or waste, varying weather conditions, and elevated noise levels at project sites. Appropriate safety procedures and personal protective equipment must be followed at all times.

Our normal office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The Safety Manager should be flexible to work outside normal business hours when safety needs, incidents, training, or project requirements arise.

Regional travel is required. Travel may include Hurt & Proffitt offices and project sites throughout Virginia, including areas around:

• Lynchburg
• Blacksburg
• Roanoke
• Halifax
• Gretna
• Chase City
• Wytheville

Estimated Base Pay Range: $80,000 - $120,000 Annual Salary.

How We Determine Pay: Final compensation within this range is determined in good faith and is based on objective factors. These include the candidate’s specialized skills, level of experience, geographic location, and specific educational background or certifications.

Additional Compensation: This position will be eligible for 401(k) matching and ownership through our ESOP and may also be eligible for incentive pay subject to company performance and performance-based raises.
