Sonographer, Echocardiography Lead

Job Summary

Location: Geisinger Medical Center (GMC). Shift: Days. Scheduled weekly hours: 40. Regular, exempt position.

We are seeking an experienced and certified sonographer to perform adult echocardiography examinations, maintain the laboratory, and collaborate with licensed practitioners. Successful candidates will receive a $15,000 sign‑on bonus (subject to eligibility) and relocation assistance where applicable.

Responsibilities

• Acquire echocardiographic examinations and maintain normal operation of the adult echocardiography laboratory.
• Perform or assist in various cardiac imaging procedures independently or under a licensed practitioner.
• Prepare, administer and document activities related to ultrasound‑enhancing agents in accordance with federal, state, and institutional regulations.
• Ensure correct orders, proper patient identification, preparation, and documentation while respecting confidentiality.
• Utilize appropriate imaging protocols, optimize technical factors, maximize patient safety, and apply ALARA principles.
• Prepare and/or administer medications through vascular access as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.
• Evaluate images for proper positioning and technical quality, verify archival storage and transfer, and post‑process data when applicable.
• Educate and monitor students and other health‑care providers.
• Communicate abnormal or unexpected findings with the provider to prioritize additional testing or urgency of care.
• Collaborate with a licensed practitioner in sonographic interventional procedures.
• Ensure equipment parameters meet optimal technical and administrative quality as requested by a licensed practitioner.
• Participate in modality quality or process‑improvement activities.
• Assist in approved research projects and complex structural heart procedures.
• Participate in ICAEL accreditation requirements.
• May assume lead technologist responsibilities and/or coordinate specific programs.
• Identify areas for improvement and provide leadership to support process‑improvement initiatives.
• Assist in developing and maintaining internal training programs and technical instruction of echocardiographic techniques.
• Work is performed in a clinical environment, accountable for all job‑specific obligations and compliance with organizational policies.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 5 years of adult echocardiography experience.
• Certification by ARRT, ARDMS, or CCI; adult echocardiography credential (ARDMS AE or CCI).
• Basic Life Support certification (default issuing body).
• Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) – CCI.
• Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) – ARDMS.
• Sonography (S) – ARRT.

Experience

• Minimum 5 years of related work experience.
• Minimum 1 year of managerial or supervisory experience (preferred).

Education

• Graduate from a specialty training program in a related field of study (required).
• Bachelor's degree in a related field of study (preferred).
