Staff Physician/Section Chief of Ambulatory Care

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Candidates must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit the application within four months of appointment. Award amount up to $200,000 and eligibility period of one to five years are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Basic Requirements United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens can be appointed only when qualified citizens cannot be recruited in accordance with VA policy. Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine. Degree obtained from a VA‑approved school in the year the course of study was completed. Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia. Residency training: completion of a VA‑approved core specialty training program leading to board certification. VA physicians in academic training programs may need to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies include ACGME or AOA accredited programs or other residencies with at least five years of verified U.S. practice. Residents in ACGME or AOA programs who meet basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis. PRPs are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged. PRPs have a scope of practice that allows them to perform restricted duties under supervision. Surgeon residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred experience: Experience in Primary Care is a pre‑requisite for selection. Duties Primary Care of a panel of primary care patients (male and female). Provide comprehensive assessment, diagnostic work‑up, clinic intervention, health history, physical examination, and patient education to Veterans in the Primary Care team setting. Outpatients include both scheduled and unscheduled Veterans. Function as an integral part of a Primary Care multi‑disciplinary team to coordinate, facilitate, and provide patient care and services. Discriminate between normal and abnormal findings to establish a diagnosis and initiate appropriate response to emergency health problems. Initiate appropriate referrals and consultations to other clinical services. Order and evaluate diagnostic tests as appropriate and recommend treatment and/or referral. Validate the effectiveness of previously implemented medical treatment. Initiate, evaluate, and change orders for medications. Include patient and family in planning care and establishing realistic measurable goals for health maintenance and improvement. Record and document clinical assessments, treatment decisions, plan of care, ongoing management, and therapeutic outcomes using CPRS on the day of encounter. Respond to computerized alerts indicating diagnostic test abnormalities and to health line requests from Veterans and family members on the day of receipt (weekends excepted). Follow performance measure guidelines, including completion of clinical reminders in CPRS. Adhere to prescription order entry requirements, the National VA formulary, and customer service standards. Work effectively with patients, families, multidisciplinary teams, and other staff. Demonstrate flexibility in responding to clinic demands, adhere to personal and professional obligations, maintain ethical standards, and sustain a harmonized, customer‑service oriented work environment. Provide surrogate care when colleagues are on leave or travel. Serve as a resource for nurse practitioners or physician assistants delivering primary care and respond to staff regarding patient concerns. Supervise other LIP staff and ensure performance to the highest standards of clinical care excellence, time efficiency, professionalism, and ethical behavior. Compensation and Benefits VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. VHA Physician Total Rewards program. The Chief of Ambulatory Care position at the VA St. Louis includes outpatient clinical care management of the Service and supervision of other LIP staff and trainees. Clinical and administrative experience in a medical setting required; prior experience with VA desirable. Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, and regular salary increases. Paid time off: 50 to 55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, and possibly 5 paid days for CME). Retirement: Traditional federal pension (vested after 5 years) and federal 401K with up to 5% VA contributions. Insurance: Federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long‑term care; many federal programs can be carried into retirement. Licensure: One full and unrestricted license from any U.S. state or territory. CME reimbursement: Possible $1,000 per year (must be full‑time with board certification). Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage. No Physicians Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting. Work schedule: Monday‑Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
