Job Title: Material Handler Job Description

This role involves safely handling, packaging, and moving steel materials within a busy manufacturing facility. You will operate a sit-down forklift, lift and band heavy steel skids, and ensure all materials are correctly identified, stored, and prepared according to work orders and control plans. The position begins on first shift for training and then transitions permanently to second shift.

• Lift and move 40–50 lb skids of steel repeatedly throughout the shift.
• Band steel materials securely according to specified procedures.
• Package material in accordance with specifications listed on the work order.
• Package material following all procedures specified in the control plan.
• Coordinate packaging activities to ensure efficient workflow and timely completion of orders.
• Use the Pro-flo production system to bar code material accurately.
• Identify material with the correct identification tags to maintain traceability.
• Designate appropriate storage locations for materials to optimize space and accessibility.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area, including keeping packaging supplies neatly arranged.
• Ensure the floor in the work area remains free of scrap paper, banding, and other debris.
• Walk frequently to move coils and materials from one side of the building to the other as needed.
• Monitor product quality during handling and packaging and report any quality concerns immediately.
• Stop production when necessary to prevent nonconforming products and promptly notify the supervisor.
• Follow all safety procedures, including use of required personal protective equipment, when working around steel and overhead cranes.

• At least 2 years of sit-down forklift experience.
• Previous forklift certification.
• Proven ability to lift 40–50 lbs repeatedly throughout the shift.
• Ability to stand on your feet for the entire shift.
• Experience in packaging or banding materials in an industrial or warehouse environment.
• Material handling experience, including moving and staging materials safely.
• Basic ability to follow written work orders and control plans accurately.
• Comfort working in a loud, heavy industrial setting with moving equipment.

• Experience working with steel materials in a manufacturing or warehouse setting.
• Prior banding experience specifically with steel or similar heavy materials.
• Familiarity with bar coding systems such as Pro-flo or similar production systems.
• Strong attention to detail and quality when packaging and labeling materials.
• Ability to coordinate tasks and communicate effectively with team members and supervisors.

You will join a safety-focused manufacturing operation that values reliability, teamwork, and attention to detail. The facility offers a spacious work area with clearly defined processes and procedures to support your success. You will have the opportunity to develop and apply your material handling and forklift skills in a structured environment with consistent hours and a stable second-shift schedule.

This role is based in a large, loud manufacturing facility where safety is a top priority. The environment includes frequent movement of steel materials and overhead cranes carrying steel bundles, requiring constant awareness and adherence to safety protocols. You must wear hard hats and safety goggles at all times, along with other required personal protective equipment. The building provides plenty of room to maneuver materials, but the temperature can become very warm in the summer. The position starts on first shift for training and then transitions permanently to second shift, running from 3:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. Expect to be on your feet for most of the shift, walking extensively and working around heavy equipment and steel products.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Sterling Heights, MI.

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $18.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
