Utility Mechanic I/Utility Mechanic II
The Department of Public Utilities provides quality water and sanitary sewer services to Virginia Beach residents. Become a part of our dedicated workforce who provide these essential services. We are currently hiring for Utility Mechanic I/Utility Mechanic II positions within our Meter Operations team.
Job duties and expectations for this position include, but are not limited to:
- Perform manual labor, such as hand excavation and heavy lifting in connection with the maintenance and repair of residential and commercial water meters
- Knowledge and proper use of basic hand tools, common maintenance and manual labor tasks and the use of associated tools
- Follows oral and written instructions and safety precautions/practices for construction work
- Use iPad to complete work assignments in an automated work order system
- Operate motor vehicles and small construction equipment
- Maintain personal protective equipment
- Lifting, without assistance, heavy articles that weigh approximately 50 pounds
- May occasionally be required to work in confined spaces
- Assist in performing routine scheduled and emergency repairs and maintenance functions to water meters
- Communicate clearly and effectively with senior employees and supervisors about any issues that arise
- Respond to verbal customer inquiries as necessary
- Team player. Supports other co-workers within the Meter Operations Bureau and Public Utilities Operations Division
- Performs other job duties as determined by the supervisor based on workload and department needs

In addition to the minimum requirements, the ideal candidate for this position will have experience listed in the preferences below. Candidates with the preferred experience should ensure the information is provided in the application/resume.
- Knowledge and experience in utility construction
- Experience working with water meters
- Experience working with hand tools (pick, shovel, wrenches, etc.)
- Knowledge and experience working with an iPad and/or laptop on an automated work order system
- Experience working with others in a team environment
- Experience working outside in extreme weather conditions
Minimum requirements:
Minimum Qualifications: Any combination of experience and education equivalent to High School or GED plus one (1) year of experience in positions such as Laborer or in a similar field such as utility maintenance. Must have a current and valid driver's license. Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must be available to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs. This position may require that incumbents to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee's supervisor based on position assigned. Water/Sewer Line Maintenance. Selected candidates not already possessing a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) MUST be able to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License Instruction Permit within six (6) months of employment and then obtain an actual CDL with air brake endorsement within nine (9) months of employment. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City's operational status.
