POST Investigator (Special Agent III)

The Criminal Justice Section of the Colorado Department of Law is recruiting an experienced investigator to join the POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) team as a Special Agent. In this role you will conduct criminal investigations into violations occurring throughout Colorado, oversee decertification processes, collaborate with law‑enforcement agencies statewide, and provide education and training to peace officers. Responsibilities As a Special Agent you will lead and conduct sensitive criminal investigations involving public officials, peace officers, or law‑enforcement agencies. Core duties include: developing case strategies, conducting interviews, collecting and preserving evidence, preparing for criminal and civil hearings, issuing subpoenas, coordinating administrative hearings, maintaining accurate records, managing the public‑facing Peace Officer Database, and providing outreach and training to agencies. Eligibility Requirements This position is open only to residents of the State of Colorado. Applicants must be Colorado P.O.S.T. certified at the time of application. Applicants must pass a thorough background investigation prior to appointment. Applicants must be proficient with a handgun and willing to travel within and outside Colorado, work nights, weekends or after‑hours, and work up to 40% travel. Applicants must have a valid Colorado driver’s license. Required Skills and Experience Minimum Qualifications Six years of professional investigative experience as a full‑time sworn detective or sworn criminal investigator at the felony level for a government law‑enforcement agency, with filing and leading felony‑level criminal cases in court; or A combination of directly related education (Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, or related) and investigative experience equal to six years, with a maximum of four years of education substituting for investigative experience and requiring at least two years of direct investigative experience. Preferred Qualifications Acted as the lead investigator on 50 or more felony‑level cases Participated in multi‑agency investigations Conducted complex investigations Trained law‑enforcement personnel Conducted internal or professional‑standards investigations Investigated officer use of force or served on a Critical Incident Response Team Required Competencies Organizational skills: multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines Experience managing or leading large‑scale or complex investigations Knowledge of investigative and interviewing techniques and state/federal laws Strong verbal and written communication skills Customer service and interpersonal skills; teamwork Critical thinking and analytical skills Benefits In addition to the State of Colorado benefits package—including medical and dental health plans, employer‑paid life insurance, paid holidays, retirement plans with Colorado PERA, vacation and sick leave, Public Service Loan Forgiveness, on‑site fitness center access, and strong retirement benefits—this role offers flexibility and opportunities for professional development.
