Audiology Assistant

Job Profile Summary This role focuses on assessing the needs of patients with physical, mental, or emotional disabilities and delivering therapy services to improve their developmental, physical or cognitive impairments. The position also performs audio/speech therapy duties, evaluates patients, and uses sound therapy to improve physical and mental conditions. Responsibilities include treating a variety of speech disorders and communication difficulties. The role is an organizational support position, providing hands‑on assistance to support daily business activities. The majority of time is spent delivering support services or activities under supervision. It is an entry‑level role that requires little or no prior experience, with routine work following standard procedures. Job Overview The position supports a team of audiologists by providing both clinical and clerical assistance within the audiology department. It contributes to efficient patient flow, high‑quality patient care, and the overall organization of audiology services. Tasks include assisting with audiological evaluations (without interpreting clinical results), instructing patients and families on hearing technology usage, performing the technical component of newborn hearing screenings following institutional protocol, and reporting required results to state public health authorities. The role also helps troubleshoot hearing technology devices, recommend repairs, and prepare authorization requests. Minimum Qualifications Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Speech Language Hearing Science, Communication Disorders, or a related program. Licensed or eligible to become a licensed Audiology Assistant in the state of Massachusetts, including completion of 20 hours of observation of clinical practice with a licensed audiologist. Preferred Qualifications Experience working with young children, including those with medically complex care requirements and developmental delays. Experience working with hearing aid use and function. Duties and Responsibilities Assist during audiological evaluations (without interpreting clinical results). Instruct patients and families on the use of hearing technology equipment. Troubleshoot hearing technology devices, recommend repairs, and draft requests for authorization of parts and repairs. Maintain organization and recording of hearing technology equipment. Schedule appointments and meetings for audiologists. Maintain organization of clinical equipment, toys, clinical and research files, and records. Enter data into databases and extract data as needed. Complete clerical duties related to the hearing aid program. Perform and check maintenance and calibration of audiological equipment. Perform the technical component of newborn hearing screenings per Tufts Medical Center protocol when coverage is needed. Follow established protocols for performing newborn hearing screening on all newborns prior to discharge. Physical Requirements Work in a normal office environment. Work in an outpatient clinic or clinical laboratory or research lab environment. Exposure to patients, occasional standing, walking, and patient transfer. Manual dexterity for computer keyboard use, quantitative testing, and manual treatment techniques. Visual assessment of patients, hearing aid appliances, and audible assessment of patient complaints. Skills & Abilities Analytical skills and judgment to interpret data and determine appropriate actions. Effective oral and written communication. Empathy and ability to interact effectively with babies, children, and parents. Organization skills, attention to detail, and good phone etiquette/customer service. Knowledge and application of care across the life span, considering aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns. Familiarity with or aptitude to learn electronic health records (EPIC). Familiarity with or aptitude to learn Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Outlook.
