Job Description

This role leads the field aspects of surveying projects by overseeing the daily work of a survey crew. The Survey Crew Chief organizes and directs field operations, ensures compliance with applicable standards and procedures, and performs a wide range of survey activities including boundary, topographic, construction, and control surveys. The position offers the opportunity to work on a diverse portfolio of projects while collaborating closely with survey leadership and professional staff.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the Survey Supervisor and practice leadership to schedule and coordinate field survey work.
• Supervise the daily work of the survey crew, set priorities, and organize work efforts with minimal direct supervision.
• Verify that all field survey activities follow standard procedures, applicable state statutes, and ACSM standards.
• Perform field survey activities including leveling, traversing, triangulation, metes and bounds surveys, construction surveys, and photo control surveys.
• Conduct boundary, topographic, construction, and land surveys, including as-built surveys as needed.
• Operate, check, and perform basic field adjustments on survey instruments such as transits, total stations, total electronic stations, data collectors, levels, and tripods.
• Maintain survey equipment by cleaning, performing preventative maintenance, and completing calibrations.
• Communicate effectively with professional staff regarding project status, issues, and field conditions.
• Participate in business development activities and contribute to strong customer service in the field.
• Support a mix of local and regional survey projects, adapting to different project types and locations as needed.

Essential Skills

• Minimum of 2+ years of experience in land surveying.
• Hands-on experience with boundary surveys, topographic surveys, construction surveys, and related land survey work.
• Proficiency in operating surveying equipment including total stations, total electronic stations, data collectors, levels, tripods, and transits.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to successfully complete a background (D&B) and driving record check.

Work Environment

This is a field-based position that is provided a company take-home vehicle, and operates within a survey department that focuses on a mix of local (Winchester) and Northern Virginia projects. The organization is an employee-owned firm with a company-funded ESOP and a workforce of nearly 175 employees across multiple states, offering a collaborative and growth-oriented culture. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Winchester, VA.

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $32.00/hr.

This is a fully onsite position in Winchester,VA.
