Job Details Job ID: 60070 Location: Kansas City Full/Part Time: Full-Time Hiring Department Campus Facilities Management (CFM) Learn more about our team here: Location: UMKC Volker and Health Sciences Campuses Job Description As a UMKC employee within the Boiler Operator position, you will be part of an engaged, diverse community and will interact daily with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds. You will perform skilled work primarily involving maintenance, repair, and operation of boilers and other heating and cooling equipment. Your responsibilities include periodical cleaning, inspection, maintenance, and minor repairs of boilers and related equipment at both campus locations. You will also support the Campus Facilities Department by working side by side with HVAC, electrical, and plumbing trades when needed. Key Responsibilities Periodically clean boilers inside and out, removing soot and residue from floors, firesides, and boiler tubes. Inspect for scaling, cracks, or defects. Disassemble and reassemble parts as necessary to facilitate cleaning and maintenance, and take the boiler offline for overhaul and bring it back online upon completion. Maintain freeze protection system, respond to alarms from the automated system, and perform paint work for the power plant. Must be prepared to evacuate a building if a dangerous situation arises. Check boilers daily for proper functioning, detect leaks, and perform minor repairs on defective parts. Make routine repairs on boilers, related equipment, and power plant fixtures. Replace packing and worn parts, overhaul solenoids and fans, and repair leaks in water and steam lines. Assist in major repairs as directed by your supervisor. May relieve or substitute for other positions performing routine maintenance duties. Read and record information from gauges and instrumentation devices; manipulate controls to attain desired levels. Must be able to change system from gas fuel to fuel oil when required by the gas company. Maintain chemical treatment of boilers to prevent deterioration and maximize energy efficiency. Perform other duties as assigned. Shift 4:00 pm – 12:00 am, Tuesday through Saturday Minimum Qualifications High school graduate or equivalent; demonstrated skills may offset this requirement. Knowledge of heating boilers with ability to operate boilers and associated equipment. Knowledge and skill in the maintenance and use of tools, equipment, and materials used for general building maintenance. Manual dexterity and physical coordination. Ability to read blueprints, plans, drawings, wiring diagrams, and electrical codes. Valid driver's license required. Anticipated Hiring Range The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $28.00 to $33.00 hourly. Shift differential of $1.00 per hour for eligible shifts. This position is eligible for a $1,500 hiring incentive. Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including education, skills, experience, and organizational requirements.
