Business Services Specialist

Job Overview Provides administrative management of the daily business functions of the Department of Communication in the areas of finance, personnel, procurement, travel services, and event coordination. The role includes financial transaction processing, payroll tasks, visa coordination, procurement, travel coordination for faculty, staff, graduate students, and guests, inventory database maintenance, event coordination, and department parking coordination. Duties Process day‑to‑day financial transactions Process payroll transactions Initiate international visa requests Handle procurement requests, including departmental purchasing card usage Coordinate travel for faculty, staff, graduate students, and guests Maintain equipment inventory database Coordinate events throughout the department Serve as the departmental parking coordinator Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED (additional education may be substituted for experience on a year‑for‑year basis) Six years of progressively responsible experience in budgeting, accounting, payroll, purchasing, and personnel work Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) Working knowledge of management principles and practices Analytical skills to review expenditures and revenues, prepare forecasts, and reconcile accounts Basic mathematical computation skills Planning and supervisory skills Ability to organize and execute multiple assignments under time constraints Understanding of university policies and procedures in finance, human resources, payroll, purchasing, and sponsored programs Ability to prepare and present budgetary, accounting, and other reports and schedules Effective oral and written communication skills Proficiency with office equipment, computers, and related software Discretion and tact in handling sensitive and confidential matters Preferences Experience in a higher education environment Experience with Workday Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, or a business‑related field (preferred) Required Application Materials Resume Cover letter List of three references The University of Maryland, College Park is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
