Job Summary The South Main Clinic at the University of Utah School of Medicine has an immediate opening for a Medical Assistant who shares our vision and passion for caring for children and their families. The Medical Assistant plays a critical role in facilitating the efficient delivery of patient care, supporting professional staff, and providing support and assistance as directed by licensed staff in rendering basic healthcare to patients. Additional responsibilities include clerical functions, data tracking, and report completion. Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description. Essential Functions Prepare patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures according to clinic procedures such as recording temperatures, pulse rate, pulse oximetry, blood pressure and responses to standardized medical history questions. Complete patient admission or registration process by reviewing accounts and other compliance-related documents for completeness and accuracy. Obtain and document missing information required for completion of the registration. Report all observed patient concerns and changes in condition to a licensed staff member. Schedule patient appointments; contact patients for rescheduling, missed appointments and appointment reminders. Perform Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Waived Lab tests such as urine dip stick, Hgb, Hct, finger stick, glucose, hemoccults and report results to the appropriate personnel. Perform specialty skills such as suture removal, straight catheterization and injections (IM, SQ and intradermal). May perform patient phlebotomy in accordance with clinic procedures and physician orders. Act as a chaperone for health care providers during patient examination as requested and assist with procedures. Monitor and clean assigned patient examination rooms, unit areas and unit equipment reporting outdated supplies and necessary equipment repairs. Answer telephones, forward telephone messages and, under the direction of licensed staff, schedule appointments, procedures and diagnostic tests. Assist in routine clerical functions such as filing of medical information in patient records, obtaining medical records from other providers and entering charges for billing purposes. Attend and complete mandatory in-services including electronic medical record, HIPAA, infection control, safety, CPR, equipment usage and procedures according to hospital and department policies. May apply leads and monitor for diagnostic procedures such as EKG and ultrasound scan under the direct supervision of licensed personnel. May assist inpatient and family education by providing educational material and general health information to patients and family members. Minimum Qualifications Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire. Verifiable completion of one (1) of the following: State approved EMT course. One (1) year of Medical Assistant experience in an ambulatory care clinic or other healthcare setting. Medical Assisting education program. University Hospital Medical Assistant certification program. Preferences Fluency in Spanish, both oral and written. Two years of related work experience in community-based pediatrics or primary care setting. Strong computer skills, excellent ability to multi-task, and ability to effectively and independently manage time.
