Genetic Counselor

Responsibilities

• Provides genetic education, counseling, and support to patients and/or families who have genetic disorders, birth defects, or who may be at risk for inherited conditions
• May coordinate and support research activities within area of expertise
• Assesses family and medical history and counsels patients and/or families in cases of genetic disorders or birth defects
• Discusses benefits and limitations of genetic testing options and obtains informed consent from interested patients.
• Assists families in understanding genetic disorders in their families, probable course of the disorder, available management strategies, medical recommendations from the geneticist and recurrence risks
• Charts and develops follow-up recommendations for patient
• Documents cases and maintains appropriate records, ensuring confidentiality
• Develops and presents educational and related programs as appropriate
• Communicates medical information, test results, diagnoses and/or proposed treatment in a manner easily understood by the patient
• Knowledge of human genetic disorders and birth defects
• Supervises, advises, and trains clinical professionals and/or students in area of expertise
• Documents telephone encounters in the medical record
• Obtains informed consent from interested patients
• Documents in a timely manner according to hospital guidelines
• Completes all mandatory department, educational and hospital requirements
• Adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards
• Regular and prompt attendance
• Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required
• Related duties as assigned

Qualifications

• Master's Degree in genetic counseling from an accredited institution Required
• CGC - Certified Genetic Counselor with the American Board of Genetic Counseling Required
• Comparable combination of education and experience may substitute for the above requirements.

Employees must be in a regular position, working 20 hours or more per week (.50 FTE or greater) to qualify for benefits.

• Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills, including communicating clearly and sensitively with patients, families, and referring clinicians
• Ability to use good judgment and work independently and in a team setting
• Ability to complete tasks in a timely and accurate manner
