Patient Care Associate-Medicine/Surgery

Responsibilities Check vital signs, weigh, and measure patients; obtain specimens and record findings on patient charts. Instruct patients on how to obtain specimens for laboratory testing and perform basic specimen screening through dipstick and hemoccult. Prepare collected specimens for pick‑up by labeling and completing required forms. Perform vision and hearing tests and simple urinalysis. Administer emergency first aid, including basic life support procedures. Perform simple first aid such as dressing changes, bandaging, and cleansing of wounds and ears. Prepare patients for examination and assist medical providers by supplying necessary equipment. Clean and disinfect examination room instruments and equipment. Inform patients on proper preparation for various medical tests. Interview patients to obtain routine personal and medical information and health history. Maintain, complete, process, and file patient charts, forms, and documents. Report patient observations to clinical staff to ensure accurate assessment. Answer routine inquiries from patients in person or via telephone and make appropriate referrals. Provide information to patients and families regarding health‑care services and safe living practices. Maintain inventory of unit equipment stock and supplies. Work effectively as a team member and assist in orientation of new employees. Direct and escort patients to other departments or health‑care settings as needed. Coordinate scheduling and re‑booking appointments through manual and/or automated systems and enter pertinent information into Electronic Medical Record systems. Obtain blood specimens for laboratory testing via venipuncture or fingerstick. Operate electrocardiograph equipment to record electrical wave tracings of the heart muscle. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or its educational equivalent. Successful completion of training courses that include phlebotomy and electrocardiography (EKG), or completion of a training program that includes both, such as Phlebotomy Technician, EKG Technician, Patient Care Training, or Medical Assistant programs. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).
