Associate Professor/Professor of Medicine (Tenure-Track) – Cardiology – Division Chief Columbia University Irving Medical Center and New YorkPresbyterian seek an exceptional physicianleader to serve as Chief of the Division of Cardiology. Consistently ranked among the nation’s elite cardiovascular programs, including #5 nationally by U.S. News & World Report for Cardiology, Heart & Vascular Surgery, the Division offers a rare platform for leadership at the highest level of academic medicine. Embedded within one of the world’s most integrated academic health systems, this role provides unparalleled opportunity to accelerate innovation, cultivate exceptional talent, and extend global impact. This appointment will hold the faculty position of Associate or Professor of Medicine based on teaching, academic medicine, and scholarship experience. The next Chief will define the Division’s strategic direction across its clinical, research, and educational missions. The Chief will also serve as the Physician‑in‑Chief of the Vivian & Seymour Milstein Family Heart Center and oversee operations and finances, advance centers of excellence, recruit and develop outstanding faculty, and foster a culture that enables bold, interdisciplinary discovery. This role is suited for a dynamic, innovative physician‑executive of national and international distinction, with a proven record of collaborative clinical leadership, administrative and programmatic success, scholarly achievement, educational excellence, faculty recruitment, community engagement, and deep research experience—someone prepared not only to steward excellence, but to shape a lasting legacy in cardiovascular medicine. Key Responsibilities In collaboration with departmental and hospital leadership, provide visionary and innovative leadership to guide the Division into its next phase of growth and development. Grow the basic, translational and clinical research portfolio of the division to align with the clinical growth in each section; with the Chair of Medicine, define and lead the Division’s research strategy and advancement in Cardiology and its broader integration within the Department of Medicine and Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Support principal investigators and other faculty within the Division in efforts to secure NIH and other grant funding and ensure a deliberate investment into research activities and priorities. Provide the vision and leadership to achieve superior clinical programs within Cardiology and related disciplines. Work with the leadership of the Department and NYP to build areas of acknowledged clinical excellence and further integrate related operations across the system. Assure that excellent clinical education and advanced training are delivered to medical students, residents, and fellows. Support the fellowship director in achieving these aims. Supervise the preparation, implementation, and monitoring of Division‑related budgets, encompassing all funding sources and ensure compliance with grant, legislative, and institutional guidelines. Recruit, hire, and retain outstanding faculty. Ensure an atmosphere of collegiality, support, and development. Provide leadership in enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion and promoting cultural competence within all aspects of the Division, the Department and NYP. Require ethical medical and financial practices across the Division, supporting compliance activities. Develop philanthropic support to sustain and expand academic programs. The Division ensures long‑term financial sustainability and resilience while strengthening its competitive differentiation among the world’s leading cardiology programs. Qualifications Ideal Experience National reputation for personal academic accomplishments. A record of scholarly academic accomplishments as reflected in number and impact of publications, a history of successful research funding and serving in national and international societies. Successful administrative experience as a leader at an academic institution. Progressive administrative experience in academic cardiology. A proven record of progressive leadership experience within a matrixed institution. Knowledge of the financial complexities, payer models, and associated reimbursement in providing high‑quality, cost‑effective specialty healthcare. Faculty Recruitment: Experience with recruitment and development of physicians and a reputation for mentorship. Ability to identify, recruit and retain a diverse staff at all levels. Demonstrated Financial and Business Acumen: Appropriate knowledge of the complex financial pressures facing academic medical centers and multi‑location health care delivery organizations. Demonstrated success in securing philanthropic support. Medical Degree and Board Certification in Cardiology. Candidates must be licensed or eligible for medical licensure in New York. Leading People The successful candidate will demonstrate the requisite leadership and administrative skills to continue to build the reputation and achievement of a world‑class Division of Cardiology by: Articulating a strong vision for building excellence in all areas of the Division. Appreciating emerging trends in cardiology and judging them for adoption by the Division. Acting strategically, with broad solicitation of views from faculty and other constituencies. Demonstrating respect for and continuity of the Division’s existing clinical programs while providing leadership to further strengthen, support, and thoughtfully expand them. Utilizing outstanding communication skills; and Supporting opportunities presented by the service initiatives of Columbia and NYP.
