Clinical Research Manager

Job Summary The Clinical Research Manager designs, plans, and directs administrative, regulatory, personnel, clinical, and financial operations for the Memory and Aging Center Alzheimer's Disease and Frontotemporal Dementia Clinical Trials Program. The position works closely with senior management, including Principal Investigators, the Program Director, and Department leadership, to develop long‑term and short‑term strategies to develop effective treatments for Alzheimer’s Disease, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Frontotemporal Dementia, and related disorders. The Manager directs subordinate managers and staff to achieve objectives and brings expertise in clinical trial operations, executing research autonomously within the large research program. Department Overview The UCSF Edward and Pearl FeinMemory and Aging Center (MAC) is a National Institute on Aging–designated Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and a leader in memory disorder research. The center includes 38 faculty members across various disciplines and investigates the clinical characteristics of neurodegenerative diseases. It provides comprehensive evaluations, conducts research on therapies, and offers patient and family support services. Key Responsibilities 20% – Achieve clinical research objectives; provide operational, clinical, and administrative leadership; supervise staff; ensure participant safety and compliance with budgets and schedules. 20% – Interpret scope of practice standards; develop policies, procedures, and guidelines; evaluate new trials for feasibility; collaborate with the Program Director on staffing; develop strategies to meet study goals; manage regulatory compliance and IRB submissions; develop trial evaluation strategies. 15% – Manage program resources; coordinate revenue from sponsors; plan and allocate resources; develop budgets with sponsors and the Clinical Trials Office; present financial projections to leadership. 5% – Engage senior management on research matters; influence decision‑making; promote clinical research within the organization and externally; represent the department at national and international meetings. 30% – Approve salary actions, promotions, hires, reclasses, terminations; plan onboarding and training; supervise research team; evaluate performance and ensure HR compliance; manage staffing requests. 10% – Develop training, supervision, and evaluation standards for staff; focus on participant safety, regulatory compliance, and research ethics; identify ongoing education needs. Required Qualifications Master’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience/training. Eight years of related experience, at least seven in a lead or supervisory role. At least 2 years of experience running complex clinical research trials with academic rigor. In‑depth knowledge of clinical research and drug development concepts, federal/state/local laws and regulations, and industry requirements; operational and theoretical expertise in clinical and patient safety standards. At least 2 years of experience managing and supervising employees. Excellent ability to build collegial relationships with investigators, researchers, industry partners, and key opinion leaders; collaborative and persuasive skills; conflict‑management techniques. Strong analytical skills; able to evaluate complex issues, generate multiple solutions, take initiative, and solve novel problems. Preferred Qualifications Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP). Registered Nurse. Experience working with patients with dementia or other neurodegenerative diseases; experience managing academic clinical trials.
