JOB DESCRIPTION

MULTILINGUAL LEARNER (MLL) SPECIALIST, ELEMENTARY

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The MLL Specialist will work with students and classroom teachers directly to maximize learning and achievement for students learning English as an additional language. The specialist will collaborate among basic education, Literacy Specialists, Special Education and Multilingual Learner (MLL) staff to provide a comprehensive system of evidence-based language instruction to students.

Reports to and evaluated by: State & Federal Programs Asst. Director with input from building principal(s).

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Demonstrate understanding in language development and proficiency in delivering skills-based, targeted English-language instruction
• Provide instructional services to preK-5 students using district-approved, evidence-based materials and strategies, consistent with current research on how young minds develop all four language domains
• Assist with coordination of MLL services during and outside the school day for students not at standard. Work with the principal and staff to develop a systematic plan for language support
• Coordinate and train others on the English language proficiency standards and assessment (WIDA), in addition to administering ELP assessments
• Identify and assess language and literacy needs for multilingual students, with the purpose of designing flexible groupings and targeted instruction
• Collaborate with district and school-level staff to develop a research-based intervention model within a multi-tiered system of support that uses individualized, diagnostic assessments to design appropriate developmental lessons for students; analyze student progress and data to determine the effectiveness of instruction
• Design and implement instructional practices that differentiate curriculum opportunities and focus on oral language development while simultaneously incorporating literacy skills
• Demonstrate classroom management procedures that provide a powerful teaching and learning environment conducive to both individuals and small groups
• Participate in PLC meetings, grade level meetings and school wide meetings. Attend frequent and ongoing-targeted professional learning for EL staff. Share expertise with staff
• Schedule intervention time that pairs expert professionals with students who have the greatest needs
• Demonstrate ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both written and oral form
• Display enthusiasm and an overall optimism toward teaching and student learning
• Implements, in a positive and supportive manner, classroom policies and procedures governing student behavior and conduct; makes referrals for assistance where appropriate

QUALIFICATIONS

• Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with ELL or Bilingual Ed endorsement
• Experience in reading and language instruction, specifically to a culturally, racially, and economically diverse student population
• Ability to attend and demonstrate proficiency in current evidence-based language-development research and instructional practices
• Possess flexibility and the ability to coordinate and manage a varied schedule
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Preferred Spanish-speaking proficiency
• Valid WA State Driver's License and reliable transportation between school sites
• Possess or be willing to acquire skills and knowledge in the following areas:

o Literacy and Language Development

o Guided Language Acquisition Design (GLAD)

o Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP)

o Effective instructional and intervention strategies

o Multi-tiered system of supports

o Elementary core and supplemental curriculum and materials

o State and District Assessment Measures
