Investigator for the Office of Standards and Training
This job opportunity is in the Public Safety Planning (PSP) Division and will be located in PEARL, MS, RANKIN COUNTY. This position represents a distinguished opportunity for highly experienced law enforcement professionals to serve at the highest standards of the profession. As an Investigator for the Office of Standards and Training, you will operate with independence, authority, and professional credibility—playing a central role in safeguarding public trust and strengthening the integrity of Mississippi law enforcement through objective, consistent, and legally sound investigations. This role is best suited for respected officers, detectives, and supervisors who have built their careers on sound judgment, investigative excellence, and ethical leadership. It offers a transition from frontline or command assignments into a strategic, statewide position where experience is essential.
Professional Qualifications Candidates must demonstrate advanced education, training, and experience, including:
- State of Mississippi Law Enforcement Professional Certification with a minimum of seven (7) years of progressive law enforcement service.
- At least two (2) years of experience conducting complex criminal, civil, or administrative investigations, including interviews of suspects, victims, and witnesses; preparation of search warrants, subpoenas, and court orders; and the practical application of BLEOST policy, as well as local, state, and federal law and applicable case law.
- A minimum of one (1) year of experience in civil, criminal, or administrative proceedings, including sworn testimony, presentations before boards or commissions, preparation of evidentiary and sworn statements, and the ability to manage and prioritize investigative caseloads.
- Experience instructing or delivering professional training to law enforcement audiences.
- Demonstrated initiative, discretion, and exceptional attention to detail.
- Proven ability to interpret and apply statutes, administrative rules, and case law to complex investigative matters.
Scope of Authority and Responsibilities:
- Conduct independent, high-level investigations into allegations of misconduct, policy violations, or unlawful activity involving law enforcement personnel, agencies, and training academies.
- Review and audit compliance with state standards and training requirements to ensure consistency and professionalism across Mississippi law enforcement.
- Interpret and apply agency policies, procedures, and legal requirements; provide authoritative guidance to agencies and leadership.
- Identify systemic risks or deficiencies and recommend corrective actions or policy improvements.
- Ensure adherence to applicable federal and state laws, regulations, and agency standards.
- Receive and assess complaints and inquiries, providing clear, professional responses and facilitating resolution when appropriate.
- Prepare comprehensive, defensible investigative reports and maintain complete case documentation.
- Serve as an expert witness, offering testimony and professional recommendations in court proceedings, hearings, and administrative reviews.
- Provide technical assistance, mentorship, and on-the-job training to support continuous improvement within the profession.
