This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!Description of WorkKnowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences**This is an anticipated vacancy position will be available June 22, 2026**This position is located at Roanoke River Correctional Institution in Halifax County, NC . Employees in this class carry a caseload of inmates, which involves supportive counseling, conducting assessments, developing case plans, answering and following up on inmate questions and problems, and making recommendations to the classification committee for a medium custody facility to include management of a minimum custody facility which is managed within the scope of the larger institution. Employees also assist in major dynamic programs or coordinate major or specialized programs for the rehabilitation of inmates, such as inmate work assignments, work release, education, or recreation as well as transition planning and coordinating. Employees in this class plan and coordinate transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community. Effective verbal and written communication with other staff, inmates and the general public. Be capable of defending oneself against attack by violent persons. Monitor off site programs which may require operation of a motor vehicle in a safe and secure manner at any time of day and in varying weather and road conditions. Work under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent and verbally abusive; Conduct continuous visual and audio surveillance of assigned work area. Prepare written reports and forms which accurately reflect information reviewed from various screens. Review, analyze, and evaluate various documents and behavior data gathered from interviews, written documentation, and personal observation. Perform crisis interventions and routine counseling to include suicide prevention. Based upon these factors, a pay increase May result.About the Division of Institutions :The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions.
