We are seeking a qualified Attorney / Contractor Associate General Counsel to support the Tennessee Department of Health in strengthening rural healthcare infrastructure across Tennessee's 89 rural counties. The selected attorney will focus on disciplinary cases involving healthcare professionals, working closely with department investigators, licensing board consultants, and legal leadership.

This position reports to a Deputy General Counsel and involves administrative law, healthcare professional licensing, litigation, and related legal projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Represent the department in administrative law proceedings before various health-related licensing boards.
• Review complaints and investigations involving healthcare licensees practicing in Tennessee's rural counties.
• Provide legal guidance and support to department investigators and licensing board consultants.
• Handle all aspects of disciplinary litigation, including discovery, motion practice, negotiations, and trials.
• Negotiate resolutions with healthcare licensees who have violated applicable practice acts.
• Manage and prioritize a substantial caseload across various stages of litigation.
• Collaborate with legal teams and department stakeholders to support effective case resolution.
• Assist with legislative projects and bill analysis related to rural healthcare delivery, as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
• Active Tennessee Bar admission with a license in good standing.
• Litigation experience, including trial experience.
• Strong knowledge of legal research, writing, and case management.
• Ability to manage and prioritize a high volume of cases.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• At least 1 year of relevant legal experience.
• Experience with administrative law, healthcare licensing, or professional disciplinary proceedings.
• Experience handling litigation before professional licensing boards.
• Familiarity with legislative research and bill analysis.

Contract Details

• This is a 37.5-hour-per-week contract position .
• Weekly in-office attendance is required.
• This position is not eligible for state employee benefits.
• The selected candidate must obtain professional liability insurance prior to the start date.
• Candidates must be able to provide their Tennessee Bar license number.
