Job Summary

The Patient Observer plays a critical role in supporting Augusta Health's mission and advancing departmental goals through measurable performance indicators and service excellence. This position contributes to a collaborative, patient-centered environment and helps drive outcomes aligned with organizational priorities.

The Patient Observer role is a position providing support to the patient care team by providing constant observation and/or ongoing monitoring of assigned patient(s) to ensure safety and prevention of injury. Responsible for working with others in the healthcare team to assure prompt intervention to prevent physical harm to patients ensuring optimal patient safety and patient comfort.

This is an ADN Scholars Program position.

Essential Job Duties

Provides supportive care to the Emergency Department patients under the direct supervision of the registered nurse or provider. Prepares patients for exams and treatments.

Performs approved procedures independently, per completed competency.

Assists registered nurse and providers with assessments, examinations and treatment.

Operates and monitors medical equipment.

Documents patient care performed, including vital signs, bedside care and observations.

Observes, documents and reports patient condition and changes in condition to the registered nurse.

Receives and carries out instructions accurately and promptly. All patient care activities are delegated and supervised by the registered nurse.

Communicates in an effective and efficient manner with all documentation, and with all coworkers, patients, visitors and providers.

Transports patients, as necessary. Respects dignity of patients.

Maintains patient safety.

Monitors stock and restocks supplies as needed.

Completes unit specific orientation.

Will be encouraged to work co-operatively with all members of the health care team in the promotion of patient health and prevention of disease.

Required Qualifications

Education: None

Licensure/Certification: Current Certification in VA-EMT-Basic, EMT-Enhanced, EMT-Advanced, EMT-I, or EMT-PCPR

Experience: None

Driver's License: N/A

Preferred Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent

Licensure/Certification: None

Experience: 1-year Prehospital or Interfacility EMT Transportation. 1-year Certified Nurse Assistant or patient care tech experience. Prior experience in a hospital, healthcare system, or related service-oriented environment. Familiarity with Augusta Health's systems, workflows, or organizational culture is a plus

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

HIPAA – appropriately manages Protected Health Information (PHI). Annual education and competencies as required per hospital certifications.

Personal Protective Equipment – when appropriate.

Safe Patient Handling devices – to minimize risk of injury.

Maintains calm and safe approach within the work environment towards those that display violent or aggressive behavior.

Able to communicate with patients and other staff – verbal, auditory, and in written form using Augusta Health documentation.
