Job Requirements

The Speech Language Pathologist serves students within an assigned building, providing evaluation, identification, and therapeutic services to students with communication needs. The position works closely with classroom teachers, special education staff, related service providers, building administration, and parents/guardians to support student access to the curriculum and progress toward IEP goals. The role requires strong clinical judgment, accurate documentation, and ongoing collaboration with the special education team.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Job Qualifications
  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License with required Speech Language Pathologist endorsement
  • Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology or related field
  • ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP)
  • Experience as a Speech Language Pathologist preferred but not required
  • Knowledge of state and federal special education requirements, including IDEA
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with staff, students, and parents/guardians
Direct Supervisor

Building Principal, in coordination with the Program Supervisor for Special Education, and may receive assignments from administrative personnel as required or assist with special projects as assigned by District administration.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate support of the Oak Lawn-Hometown School District #123 Strategic Framework.
  • Uphold the established Board of Education policies, regulations, and administrative procedures.
  • Assess students' communication skills (e.g., articulation, fluency, voice, expressive and receptive language) to identify communication disorders, determine program eligibility, and develop recommendations for treatment.
  • Provide speech and language therapy to eligible students, individually and in groups, to address IEP goals and minimize the impact of communication disorders on student success.
  • Develop treatment plans, interventions, and educational materials that comply with regulatory requirements and address student needs.
  • Participate as a member of the special education team in evaluating students and determining eligibility when case studies are necessary.
  • Participate in IEP meetings, annual reviews, problem-solving meetings, and parent conferences to present evaluation results and develop treatment plans.
  • Contribute to Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans as a team member when communication-related factors are relevant.
  • Support team-based crisis response and risk assessment efforts by contributing communication-related expertise as needed.
  • Instruct eligible students in the use of appropriate communication technologies (e.g., hearing aids, FM systems, augmentative and alternative communication devices).
  • Provide consultation to parents/guardians and teachers regarding student communication needs and strategies.
  • Provide outreach to students and families through home communication, phone contact, and referral to appropriate agencies when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate files and records (e.g., progress reports, activity logs, treatment plans, screening results, quarterly reports, Medicaid billing documentation) to ensure compliance and availability of information for reference.
  • Evaluate student progress on a regular basis and provide reports as required.
  • Create a supportive therapy environment that is age-appropriate and conducive to learning.
  • Utilize technology to support learning, collaboration, and documentation.
  • Participate in meetings, workshops, and seminars (e.g., training, IEPs, team meetings) to share and gather information.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, related service providers, and outside agencies to communicate information, resolve issues, and deliver services in compliance with established guidelines.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records, staff information, and program documentation.
  • Communicate and cooperate with colleagues, students, parents/guardians, and the community as needed to meet professional standards.
  • Participate in meetings and perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Building Principal or designee in accordance with the Board of Education.
  • Utilize time management techniques to organize and prioritize work.
  • Regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job.
