Diesel Mechanic

Position Description Senior Level Diesel Technician – Permanent Full Time. Location: Hampton, Virginia. Hiring immediately. Compensation and Benefits Hourly Pay: $31.00 per hour Certification Bonus: $100 for each new ASE certification (up to $700) Quarterly Bonus: Up to $500 each quarter (four times per year) Schedule: Monday–Friday, weekends off Hours: First shift 8:00 am–4:30 pm Annual Merit Pay increases On‑the‑Job paid training Medical, Dental, Vision, 401(k) starting at 30 days 12 weeks paid maternity leave for qualifying employees Paid time off accrues from day one (80 hours per year) Additional day off for U.S. military veterans 401(k) company match 15 % employee discount on Ryder stock PPE, uniforms, and boot allowance provided Top Technician recognition program: cash prizes $250–$50,000 for top 12 techs annually Tuition repayment program up to $5,000 Responsibilities Perform vehicle maintenance and repair duties, including standard and preventive maintenance Diagnose complex mechanical and electronic problems using diagnostic computers Complete detailed mechanical inspections and repairs with minimal supervision Replace defective components as instructed Work unsupervised on most tasks Perform facility maintenance duties Interact with customers/drivers to determine nature of complaints Utilize key functions of Shop Management System and electronic documentation Work in accordance with all federal, provincial, and corporate compliance guidelines (e.g., safety, DOT, MOT) Act as a mentor for Tech 1 and Tech 2 levels Access and use internal and external maintenance documents Support operations as required, including Service Island support Be SBTIII trained within 180 days (SBT220) Complete 2 OEM online diagnostic scan tool courses within 365 days Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent preferred Vocational or technical certification, post‑secondary degree or technical certifications preferred Basic tools available Demonstrated aptitude and applied experience in mechanical repair of automotive gas or diesel engines, including routine preventive maintenance (oil changes, brake and tire work) and basic diagnostics and repairs (AC, electrical systems) Three (3) years or more relevant work experience preferred All other certifications required by location required Valid Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A preferred Minimum 2 years of experience with mechanical repairs and diagnostics on heavy‑ and medium‑duty equipment Knowledge and ability to apply computer skills: PC, Windows, mouse, etc. Additional Requirements Must drive Ryder vehicles; must obtain CDL within 6 months after hire Pass a Ryder drug test Pass a DOT physical Pass a Ryder road test Pass a Ryder background and motor‑vehicle check, including drug and alcohol verification from previous employers for the last 3 years Additional screening may include employment and education verification, motor‑vehicle records check, road test, or buyer background requirements as applicable EEO Statement Ryder is an equal opportunity employer and a drug‑free workplace.
