Bus Mechanic Lead

The Lead Bus Mechanic assists the Foreman in supervising and assuring timely and quality work is performed by bus shop employees. The position also assists in ensuring safe working conditions and procedures. The bus mechanic lead must be able to supervise and give directions to the employees assigned and participate in the work to be performed. Attendance, physical presence, and timeliness are required and are essential functions of this position.

Essential Functions:

• Oversee work of mechanics, body techs, hourly/seasonal and apprentices in all aspects of work
• Manages inventory, orders parts and supplies to ensure essential items are available
• Ensures all repairs/work meet safety and quality standards before a vehicle is returned to service
• Schedules and assigns work effectively and efficiently
• Requires some communication with department employees outside of work hours

Required Knowledge and Skills:

• Proficiency in using various mechanical and power tools, machine tools, measuring instruments, oscilloscopes, cutting and welding equipment, brake lathes, valve grinders, and maintenance tools
• Ability to understand and operate from schematics and flow charts
• Strong skills in verbal and written communication, mathematics, and interpersonal relations
• Skill in using computers and general office equipment, maintaining inventory records, state inspection records, IM records, and communicating with the Utah State Highway Patrol and the Salt Lake County Health Department
• Ability to motivate and encourage subordinates to create a positive and productive work environment
• Knowledge of current and upcoming developments in the field through continuing education, manufacturing seminars, and other resources
• Ability to effectively supervise tasks that are sometimes complex and require analytical thinking and problem solving

Required Education and Qualifications:

• Requires a high school diploma or equivalent
• Requires a current, valid class B, or higher, commercial driver's license with school bus and passenger endorsement - or be willing to obtain within 6 months of hire
• Requires two years of formal training in aspects of heavy duty diesel mechanics
• Requires a current Utah Highway Patrol Safety Inspection Certificate or willingness to obtain within 6 months of hire
• Requires a current Salt Lake County Vehicle Emissions Certificate or willingness to obtain within 6 months of hire
• Requires a minimum of one (1) year of journeyman bus mechanic experience in a related field
• School bus/transportation experience (1) year
• Supervisory experience preferred

Assigned Decision Making:

• Creates and monitors maintenance schedules
• Makes decisions as to repair or replace in a variety of complex situations involving quality and safety
• Empowered to determine whether specific equipment is dangerous to the user and remove the equipment or neutralize it in place
• Assists in hiring, promotion, retention, and performance review decisions upon request from the Foreman
• Determines maintenance and repair needs for expensive shop machinery and equipment

Non-supervisory Interaction:

• Interacts with maintenance employees, custodians, inspectors, contractors, district and school administration, vendors, and the public

Supervisory Responsibility:

• Supervises the day-to-day work of related staff
• May supervise multiple trades on special projects
• Monitors the progress of apprentices assigned to ensure that District apprenticeship and training standards are maintained
• Motivates and encourages subordinates to promote a positive and productive work environment
• Makes specific work assignments and monitors the performance of assigned employees
• Coordinates with contract service vendors and material vendors on projects as assigned

Budget Responsibility:

• Responsible for maintaining and tracking purchase card usage and follow district purchasing guidelines

Working Environment:

• May be subject to high voltage, heat, noise, dirt, chemicals, confined spaces, raw sewage, and hot and cold climate
• Some district emergencies may require additional irregular hours
• May experience occasional stress from emergencies and in meeting project deadlines
• Interruptions may occur while performing work requiring accuracy and concentration

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak and/or hear
• The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, and crouch
• The employee is occasionally required to use hands to handle or feel objects and must occasionally climb or balance
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception
• The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds
