Position Title: Therapist in Residence (2-year Fixed term) Position Type: Fixed Term (Fixed Term) Hiring Range: $91,800 - $114,785 per year; Compensation will be based on education, experience, skills relevant to the role, and internal equity. Pay Frequency: Annual This is a full-time, live-in position with housing provided in a one- or two-bedroom apartment located within a residence hall. The role is a two-year fixed-term appointment, with the potential for continuation beyond the initial term pending budget approval. To best support the needs of the campus community, this position follows a non-traditional work schedule, typically operating from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. During the summer months, the schedule transitions to standard business hours of 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. A. POSITION PURPOSE The Therapist in Residence (TIR) program places professionally trained mental health clinicians into residence halls to increase mental health support for students living in the Residential Learning Communities (RLCs) and for student residential staff: Community Facilitators (CFs), Neighborhood Representatives (NRs), and Assistant Residential Directors (ARDs). TIRs promote mental health awareness, increase access to mental health services and reduce stigma regarding mental health and other barriers to accessing mental health services. The roles and responsibilities encompass working as a mental health consultant, mental health educator , and a clinical services provider. B. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: TIR as Clinical Services Provider and Mental Health Consultant (40%) Carry a small case load (6-8) within CAPS for individual therapy. Exercise sound judgment and discretion in working with clients. Consult with supervisors and colleagues regarding challenging clinical and case management issues. Work independently with clients in accordance with CAPS protocols and policies. Conduct assessment, short term individual, couple’s, and group therapy for clients. Provide crisis screening, assessment, and interventions. Develop customized treatment plans and utilize interventions that are informed by client's developmental and psycho-social needs, by client's diversity and identities, and by excellent standard of care. Provide health education related to promoting client self-care and the eight dimensions of well-being. Uphold client’s rights in accordance with legal and ethical requirements. Complete required digital clinical documentation and records in accordance with CAPS policy and practices. Effectively function as a professional clinical member of a multidisciplinary treatment team. Collaborate with Cowell Center’s Case Manager, as needed. Mental Health Consultation for students in RLCs and for CFs, ARDs, and NRs Maintain clinical professionalism in non-clinical settings. Provide Check-In consultation appointments for students living in the RLCs, approximately 8 per week. Facilitate support groups for CFs, ARDs, and NRs to support student staff’s mental health. When appropriate, collaborate with residential leadership teams: Resident Directors, Faculty Directors, Spirituality Facilitators, and other university partners. Provide referrals and linkage to on-campus and off-campus resources. Provide on-call, after-hours consultation for university partners via a staff rotation (2 weeks per academic quarter, no summers or holiday breaks). Respond to large scale campus incidents as needed to provide support for the campus community. Complete required digital consultation documentation and records in accordance with CAPS and TIR Program policies and practices. Outreach Duties (20%) Serve as a liaison to designated campus partners and committees. On a rotating basis, attend quarterly Diversity and Greek Life forums. Participate in student and staff events to promote mental health and wellness programs and services. Normalize the use of mental health resources through increased visibility and engagement with campus residents. Other outreach duties are determined by campus needs and specific RLCs. Departmental Duties (25%) Establish collaborative relationships built upon mutual trust, respect, and professionalism. Proactively and effectively communicate with peers and managers. Effectively resolve interpersonal conflicts. Actively and collaboratively, support the mission, goals, and initiatives of CAPS. Comply with CAPS policies and procedures. Update knowledge regarding research, regulations, and relevant issues that impact CAPS and TIR services. Attend scheduled CAPS staff meetings and division events Attend leadership meetings as scheduled for assigned RLC. Serve on departmental committees. Contribute to staff morale and a positive and supportive work environment. Contribute to CAPS quality of services. Participate in the departmental performance review and improvement process. Participate in evaluation of department policies and practices and offer feedback for improvements. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (15%) Provide advice, consultation, and support in the development, implementation and evaluation of department wide policy. Remain knowledgeable of best practices in the field of psychology and university counseling centers while staying abreast of the latest trends in the discipline of psychology. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE Master’s degree (Marriage and Family Therapy, Clinical Social Work, Professional Clinical Counseling) in counseling, clinical psychology, social work, or comparable program from an accredited program, required. A minimum of 1000 hours of clinical experience, required. 1-3 years of experience in the mental health field, required. Clinically Licensed in California (LMFT, LCSW, LPCC, preferred. Prior college or university counseling experience, preferred. Prior experience addressing the needs of a diverse student population, preferred. Two years post-degree experience with young adults, preferred. KNOWLEDGE Demonstrated ability to use technology in improving the service delivery and evaluation of programs. Demonstrated knowledge in evidence based psychotherapy approaches that are effective for a diverse student population. Demonstrated knowledge of differences between consultation and clinical services. Demonstrated knowledge of professional ethical and legal standards. Demonstrated knowledge of university on-campus living (residence life), preferred. SKILLS Demonstrated effective clinical skills in assessment, treatment, and crisis management. Demonstrated effective communication skills, in both written and verbal form with a variety of people including students, faculty, staff, alumni, and parents. ABILITIES Ability to establish collaborative professional relationships. Ability to work effectively as an independent clinician as well as a clinical team member. Ability to cultivate a therapeutic alliance and a therapeutic space for a diverse client population. Ability to make consistent sound clinical decisions and consult as needed. Ability to receive feedback and integrate feedback into practice as part of continued professional development. Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries associated with living in residence halls among students.
