About the Job
The Institute on Community Integration (ICI) is seeking up to two 100% Abstractors to participate in and support a federally funded public health surveillance program, the CDC ADDM Network, focused on monitoring of autism spectrum disorder. The individual(s) will be a record review and abstraction specialist for the Minnesota Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network (MN-ADDM). This project is funded by the CDC to participate in the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network (ADDM). The ADDM Network are a group of programs funded to estimate the number of children with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities living in different areas of the United States. Successful applicant(s) must uphold strict confidentiality policies and procedures. The Abstractor(s) will participate in project activities, including participating in data collection of education and health records through utilization of a complex web-based data system, interfacing with partners in a highly professional manner, and maintaining reliability on CDC ADDM Network methodology. Abstractor(s) will report to Project Coordinator and will provide regular updates on abstraction progress. The Abstractor(s) is(are) expected to collaborate with other Institute staff and with other researchers on various research and knowledge translation activities on other ICI activities as assigned.

This position is based on campus and involves local travel to clinical and educational sites. Per UMN policy, work may be done remotely when appropriate and approved by your manager. All UMN employees are expected to follow applicable public health, data security, and safety procedures.
This position is represented by the AFSCME Local 3937 and 3801 Council 5, AFL-CIO. The hours are M-F, 8:00-4:30. The work location is on the Minneapolis campus. The pay range for this position is $22.39 - $29.00 per hour.
Bargaining unit consideration begins on May 29, 2026 and ends on June 4, 2026.
Please note, this position is not eligible for H-1B or Green Card sponsorship. This position does not offer a STEM OPT training program.
Job Responsibilities:
Quantitative and Qualitative Data Collection (85%)
- Conduct population-based, multi-source surveillance for developmental and intellectual disabilities among children using methodology developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
- Travel regularly to schools, hospitals and clinics in the metro area to conduct surveillance by reviewing source records and abstracting relevant medical, demographic, and diagnostic information.
- Work independently to determine data to be included in the project based on the CDC surveillance protocol.
- Work directly with school and clinic personnel to access the files, maintaining excellent communication and professionalism.
- Adhere to data security and confidentiality procedures.
- Achieve and maintain reliability on CDC methods, participating in training as required.
- Enter both narrative and quantitative data obtained from multiple sources into a complex web-based central database using a laptop computer.
- Maintain relationships with sources and answer data collection methodology related questions from educational and clinical agencies.
Data Analysis (10%)
- Collaborate with the project coordinator and principal investigator on surveillance findings, questions and problems.
- Assist with organizing, preparing and presenting data for meetings and presentations.
Project Team Activities (5%)
- Participate in staff meetings.
- Participate in training and events.
- Maintain professional development, which includes completing and passing necessary training quizzes and evaluations.
- Attend CEHD, ICI, Center, or required meetings as well as those requested by supervisor to attend.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- HS Diploma/GED plus minimum of 4 years of experience in the fields of health, special education, pediatrics, psychology, or child development, education may substitute for some of the years of experience.
- Experience entering data into a database.
- Ability to work independently, as well as function as part of an interdisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated strong attention to detail.
- A valid driver's license and reliable transportation is necessary.
- Ability to collaborate eHectively with people from a variety of communities, backgrounds, and identities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills * Demonstrate high level of professionalism.
- Experience working with narrative data, such as in education or medical records.
- Knowledge of intellectual and developmental disabilities (for example autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy).
- Experience abstracting from medical records or education records * Experience with clinical or educational assessments.
- Experience in the field of special education, public health, child development, pediatrics, or psychology.
