Mental Health Professional (Overnight Shift)

Summary The Mental Health Professional (MHP) provides supervision and therapeutic programming to a group of youth, assisting them with daily activities and needs according to individual treatment and behavior intervention plans, within the framework of agency and program policies and procedures. The aim is to help children develop the skills needed to manage their mental health conditions so they can safely transition back into a less restrictive environment, such as returning home or entering a foster home. Operate within the parameters of the agency and program’s treatment model. Listen actively to each child and provide appropriate feedback related to each presenting problem, offering individual or group counseling as needed. Model appropriate, safe, and prosocial behavior at all times. Engage mindfully with youth during shifts. Provide counseling and teach skills to youth in treatment, documenting the sessions in accordance with insurance/Medicaid requirements. Address maladaptive youth behavior based on individual treatment and behavior intervention plans. Take primary responsibility for modifying and individualizing the treatment process. Facilitate a therapeutic recreation program, actively supervising youth and participating in activities. Protect residents to ensure physical and emotional safety, including mandated reporting of suspected child abuse or neglect. Coordinate and transport children to and from appointments and activities. Assist program participants with proper attire, hygiene, and maintaining a clean, orderly environment that promotes calm and health. Ensure timely and accurate completion of client documentation per state and program requirements. Participate in meetings, case reviews, admissions, staffings, and discharges as instructed. Attend and actively participate in staff meetings and job‑related training. Successfully complete Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) Training. Complete all required initial training within 90 days of hire and participate in a minimum of 24 hours of additional training annually, covering safety, policy & procedures, trauma‑informed care, and TCI. Lead, authorize, or participate in emergency safety interventions, including physical interventions, document them before shift end as required by state law and agency policy. Qualifications & Requirements Minimum age 21 years. Demonstrated skills in service to adults or children, ability to work within agency structure, accept supervision, and collaborate with residents and providers. Bachelor’s degree in counseling, guidance, rehabilitation counseling, social work, education, vocational counseling, psychology, pastoral counseling, family therapy, or related human services field; or equivalent experience as specified in the Illinois Administrative Code. Two years of supervised clinical experience in a mental health setting, or five years of supervised clinical experience with a high school diploma or GED. Ability to write notes and significant event reports conforming to prescribed style and format within expected timeframes. Proficiency in standard written and spoken English. Ability to apply concepts of finite mathematics. Problem‑solving skills to handle varied concrete situations with limited standardization; ability to interpret instructions in multiple formats. Competence in using Microsoft Office and data entry into databases. Physical Demands and Work Environment Use hands to manipulate objects, tools, or controls; talk and hear frequently; stand, walk, and sit regularly. Manage strenuous tasks and physical exertion; meet requirements to maintain TCI training certification. Initiate, supervise and/or assist in manual restraint and seclusion of clients; demonstrate de‑escalation techniques as trained. Work environment usually moderate to loud noise; requires availability during evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Additional Requirements Must own a vehicle, be licensed to drive, and have auto insurance for client transport.
