Department Summary The Department of Art and Art History, established in 1911, offers BA, BFA, MA, and MFA degrees and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). Brief Description of Duties The Department of Art and Art History at San Jose State University is searching for part‑time faculty to teach undergraduate courses, particularly in Renaissance, Baroque, or Asian Art History. The successful candidate will also teach lower‑division general survey courses, including the introduction to design history (ARTH 72) and/or the introduction to visual culture (ARTH 15). The candidate will teach within a dynamic department that encourages cross‑disciplinary practice between art history, art practice, and art education. Responsibilities Demonstrate awareness of and address the needs of a student population of great diversity—including age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religious, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation—through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement. Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). Ensure all classes are offered and meet as scheduled throughout the entire semester or term, in the mode assigned and listed in the schedule (e.g., asynchronous, synchronous, bichronous, in‑person, or hybrid). Required Qualifications

• Ph.D. degree in Art History or related area and university‑level teaching experience is required.
• Strong writing skills and an ability to direct and assess student writing is an asset.
• Scholarly engagement in the area of interest evidenced by a record of presentation and publication.
• Ability to evaluate adult learners.
• Evidence of satisfactory achievement in previous academic work.

Compensation Compensation and salary range placement are determined by qualifications and experience. Anticipated monthly salary rates for full‑time faculty are:

• L‑A / Range 2 – $5,507–$5,959
• L‑B / Range 3 – $6,221–$7,481
• L‑C / Range 4 – $6,825–$9,431
• L‑D / Range 5 – $8,593–$10,347

Part‑time rates are prorated based on full‑time monthly rates. Salaries are paid six times per semester. Employment Conditions Faculty must complete CSU employee training on prevention of discrimination and harassment, gender equity and Title IX, and health and safety. The faculty member will be subject to Clery Act review for designation as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) and may be required to report Clery incidents.
