Job Summary Salary: $3,691.40 - $4,346.16 biweekly. The Allen Police Department is accepting applications for the Out-of-State Lateral Police Officer position. Individuals meeting the minimum qualifications are invited to submit an online application. In this role, the officer protects and serves the community by patrolling the city, enforcing traffic laws, reporting motor vehicle accidents, investigating crimes, and maintaining positive community relations. The officer does not provide direction to other employees. Applicants must be prepared to complete the Texas certification process, relocate, and finish required courses within six months of employment. Eligibility information can be found at Essential Job Functions Promote a secure environment by patrolling in car, on foot, and on bike; deter crime by presence, assist in high‑risk situations, provide surveillance operations, take reports, operate police equipment, enforce state and local laws, subdue combative or uncooperative citizens, make lawful arrests, and keep peace on civil scenes. Enforce traffic laws by patrolling roadways, responding to Dispatch Center calls, observing violations, making traffic stops, searching vehicles if probable cause is found, issuing citations or verbal warnings, and filing reports. Report motor vehicle accidents by responding, clearing the roadway, interviewing involved parties, recording evidence, drawing conclusions, issuing citations, and filing reports. Investigate crimes by responding to calls, interviewing witnesses, victims, and suspects, gathering evidence, filing reports, issuing citations, taking suspects into custody, and filing charges through the District Attorney’s office. Maintain positive community relations by answering citizens’ questions, providing civic service, surveying the public to evaluate problem areas and needs, and soliciting opinions on police matters. Qualifications Education and Experience Pathway A: At least 30 college credit hours with a GPA of 2.0 or higher; two years of continuous, full‑time law‑enforcement service with arrest powers; assigned to patrol duties; and successful completion of a Field Training Program. Pathway B: High‑school diploma or GED; three years of continuous, full‑time law‑enforcement service with arrest powers; assigned to patrol duties; and successful completion of a Field Training Program. *College credits must be officially recognized by the Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education. Certification and Other Requirements Current and valid driver’s license and/or ability to obtain a Texas driver’s license before employment. Minimum age 21. Eligible for certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) and meet the requirements for the Out‑of‑State Peace Officer process. Do not begin the process until ready. Hiring Process Entrance Examination Four‑part examination—reading comprehension, arithmetic, spelling/grammar, and writing skills. A score of 70% or higher in each section is required. Physical Assessment 1.5‑mile run within 15:26 300‑meter run within 62 seconds 26 push‑ups (no time limit) 30 sit‑ups within 60 seconds Background Investigation Extensive check of criminal, driving, employment records, education, credit references, and character references. Interview Board Assessment of background, employment, prior police experience, criminal history, traffic record, military service, situational reasoning, professionalism, dependability, and communication skills. Polygraph Examination State‑licensed polygraph examiner conducts examinations following state guidelines. Final decision is made by the Chief of Police. Psychological Examination Assessment of suitability for law‑enforcement work. Must receive a rating of 4.0 or above to pass. Physical Examination and Drug Screen Evaluation of physical capability for duty—including lifting, running, bending, walking, hearing, and eyesight. Successful completion of all phases leads to a final interview with the Chief of Police or designee. Eligibility Requirements At least 21 years of age. Citizen of the United States. At least 30 college credits with a GPA of 2.0 or higher and two years of continuous full‑time law‑enforcement service, OR a high‑school diploma or equivalent plus three years of continuous full‑time law‑enforcement service. Honorably discharged from any military service or proof of acceptable re‑enlistment eligibility if prior service is uncharacterized. Current and valid motor vehicle operator’s license. Not convicted of or received deferred adjudication for any family‑violence offense. Not on court‑ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of a Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years. Not convicted of an offense above the grade of a Class B misdemeanor. Not convicted of a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years. Not under any criminal charges, indictment, or current community service or probation for any criminal offense. Not have excessive traffic tickets or accidents. Not have had a license issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement revoked or suspended. Ability to work shift work, holidays, and weekends. Good moral character. Ability to read, comprehend, and apply training materials, departmental policy, regulations, laws, and ordinances. Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, law‑enforcement agencies, and the public. Ability to learn the use and care of firearms and specialized equipment. 20/20 vision (corrected or uncorrected) unless corrected by contact lenses worn on duty. Hearing loss not exceeding an average loss of 25 decibels at 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hz; not exceeding 35 decibels at 500 and 4000 Hz. Ineligibility and Disqualifiers Ineligibility List Not a citizen of the United States. Convicted of a Class B misdemeanor within ten years or higher offenses that may result in temporary or permanent disqualification. Convicted of a class A misdemeanor or felony under state or federal law. Charged with any criminal offense that remains pending. Conviction for DUI or DWI within ten years. Current or past community supervision or probation above the grade of a Class B misdemeanor within ten years. Failure to read, write, or speak English fluently. Inability to perform essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation. Inability to obtain a Texas driver’s license within the required timeframe. Disqualifiers List Use of illicit substances as indicated by the guidelines (e.g., marijuana or derivatives within the last three years). Abuse or misuse of prescription medication(s) of any kind. Permanently disqualified for unlawful possession or use of controlled substances after the 25th birthday. Previous possession of felony‑level drugs before 25, requiring a ten‑year waiting period. History of inhaling solvents, paints, or similar products after the age of 17. Use of illegal anabolic steroids after 1991. Three or more moving violations or preventable accidents in the preceding 36 months, or a reckless driving conviction in the preceding 60 months. Dismissal or resignation for inefficiency, delinquency, or misconduct.
