Instructor, Adult Education (Adult Basic Education/Adult Secondary Education) – Adjunct Teaching faculty at Guilford Technical Community College are responsible for supporting student success by creating an optimum learning environment, responding to student needs, managing effective instructional activities, modeling employability skills, demonstrating professionalism, developing cooperative work relationships with other faculty and staff, supporting college administrative requirements, and maintaining competency in their instructional field. They will be responsible for quality instruction and for effective participation and interest in the total affairs of the college. Under general supervision, this position will prepare and teach Adult Basic and Adult Secondary Education courses in the Adult Education program. The instructor must be able to instruct a wide variety of topics within the curriculum and may be required to teach day and/or evening hours. The instructor will be responsible for student CASAS and/or TABE post‑testing referrals as needed. Assignment may involve working with students with intellectual or developmental disabilities, and/or preparing students for high school equivalency tests such as GED, HiSET or TASC, as well as for transition to post‑secondary education and employment. Duties & Functions Teaching Prepare and teach departmental courses Develop learner‑centered lesson plans Employ teaching strategies and instructional materials for different learning styles Incorporate, as pedagogically appropriate, current technology in classroom, distance learning and laboratory environments Create and model a quality learning environment that supports a diverse student population Prepare, distribute and utilize instructional support materials, including course syllabi, supplementary materials, instructional media and other devices as appropriate Conduct appropriate assessment of student learning outcomes in courses and programs/general education as appropriate Professional Development Participate in professional development activities to maintain currency in field; maintain current credentials or licensures as required by program or accreditation Participate in professional development opportunities to advance teaching skills and strategies Administration Provide daily and ongoing oversight of facilities, equipment and student records to include: maintain classroom and laboratory spaces including upkeep of assigned equipment; provide for security of facilities, equipment and instructional materials and maintain safe working conditions; maintain student records (e.g., grades and attendance) in accordance with established deadlines using a variety of technology‑based programs (e.g., Colleague, WebAdvisor, Moodle); comply with all applicable college, state and federal rules and regulations Student Support Provide an environment conducive to student success, including addressing student concerns in a timely manner, promoting retention/persistence by assisting students to develop strategies for success, referring students to campus and community resources when appropriate Model and demonstrate the College’s employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility and teamwork Additional Duties and Responsibilities Perform all duties as assigned by supervisor Education Bachelor’s degree required from a regionally accredited post‑secondary institution Master’s degree in Adult Education or related field preferred Experience Teaching and/or industry training experience Fluent reading, spoken, and written English communication skills Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) Teaching experience in Adult Education (Basic Skills) or in post‑secondary education (preferred) Experience with assessment of student learning outcomes (preferred) Experience with distance learning and/or alternate instructional delivery systems (preferred) Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) Commitment to the nature and role of the Community College, particularly its “open door” policy Personal and professional competence for the responsibilities assigned Ability to multitask, respect diversity, adapt to changing procedures, protocols or assignments, create and maintain a learner‑centered environment, communicate effectively, implement technology solutions Department / Job Specific Requirements Complete and review course documentation, e.g., rosters, contracts, etc. Ability to work independently and balance multiple priorities Mandatory initial and annual trainings: reporting requirements, discrimination & anti‑harassment, shooter on campus, personal information protection, ethics and social responsibility, linking student learning outcomes, Moodle certification if teaching online or hybrid Physical Demands Work requires a flexible schedule including some evenings and occasional weekends; may require instruction on Greensboro, High Point, or Cameron campuses or at a community partner location Mostly sitting, with some walking or standing; carrying objects up to 20 pounds; rare exposure to hazardous chemicals, filth, fumes, adverse weather, or personal health and safety risks Criminal history checks with acceptable results required #J-18808-Ljbffr The Chronicle Of Higher Education, Inc.
