Senior Acoustics Engineer

Experience Required: 10–15+ Years Position Summary We are seeking an experienced Senior Acoustics Engineer to lead environmental noise and vibration analyses for major transportation, infrastructure, and public works projects. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership in the assessment, prediction, mitigation, monitoring, and regulatory compliance of environmental noise and vibration impacts throughout project planning, environmental clearance, design, and construction. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience supporting rail transit, highway, aviation, or other large civil infrastructure projects and will serve as the technical lead for acoustical engineering services while coordinating with multidisciplinary project teams, regulatory agencies, contractors, and clients. Key Responsibilities Lead environmental noise and vibration assessments for transportation and infrastructure projects in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Prepare and review technical studies including: Existing Conditions Reports Noise and Vibration Impact Assessments Noise and Vibration Technical Memoranda Construction Noise and Vibration Assessments Develop practical mitigation strategies for operational and construction noise impacts. Prepare Noise and Vibration Control Plans and Monitoring Plans during construction. Conduct field measurements and noise monitoring using industry-standard instrumentation. Perform predictive noise and vibration modeling using accepted methodologies and software. Evaluate ground-borne vibration impacts on sensitive receptors including residential, commercial, institutional, healthcare, educational, and performing arts facilities. Interpret and apply FTA, FRA, FHWA, FAA, Caltrans, CEQA, and NEPA noise and vibration guidance. Coordinate with environmental planners, civil engineers, architects, contractors, utility teams, and public agencies. Provide technical guidance during design development and construction. Support permitting, environmental clearance, stakeholder meetings, and public presentations. Review contractor submittals and ensure compliance with project-specific noise and vibration requirements. Mentor junior acoustical engineers and environmental specialists. Participate in proposal development, technical interviews, and business development activities. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Acoustical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related technical discipline. Minimum 10–15 years of progressively responsible experience in environmental acoustics. Demonstrated experience supporting major transportation or infrastructure projects. Strong knowledge of: Building Acoustics Community Noise Assessment Experience preparing technical documentation for environmental clearance under CEQA and/or NEPA. Experience developing construction Noise and Vibration Control Plans. Knowledge of federal and state regulatory guidance including: FTA Transit Noise and Vibration Manual FRA Noise and Vibration Guidance FHWA Traffic Noise Model Local municipal noise ordinances Excellent technical writing and communication skills. Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects. Preferred Qualifications Master's degree in Acoustics, Engineering, Physics, or related field. Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain. Board Certification or Chartered Engineer status (preferred). Membership in professional organizations such as: Institute of Acoustics (IOA) Acoustical Society of America (ASA) Institute of Noise Control Engineering (INCE) Experience serving as an expert witness or providing technical support for legal proceedings.
