About Role

The Controls Engineer/Technologist plays a key role in delivering innovative automation and control system solutions for Altec's customers across the wood products, entertainment, and industrial sectors. Working as part of a collaborative project team, this position contributes to the design, programming, testing, commissioning, and optimization of advanced control systems that power complex machinery and industrial processes. From concept development through startup and customer handover, the Controls Engineer/Technologist applies technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and hands-on field experience to support the successful delivery of reliable, high-quality automation solutions.

Depending on experience, the successful candidate will independently manage assigned technical responsibilities while collaborating with senior engineers on more complex system designs and project execution. Working closely with project managers, mechanical engineers, technicians, and customers, this role contributes to the delivery of safe, innovative, and reliable automation solutions. What You’ll Do

You will contribute across a variety of exciting automation projects by: 

• Control System Design: Lead the design and layout of electrical control systems from concept to completion, ensuring they meet customer and project specifications.
• Electrical Design: Develop detailed electrical schematics and layouts using tools such as AutoCAD or EPLAN while adhering to relevant standards, including UL508a and ISO 13849.
• PLC Programming: Program and debug control logic for Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), including Allen-Bradley, Siemens and Beckhoff systems, both from scratch and based on existing programs.
• HMI Programming: Design and program Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) to create intuitive, user-friendly interfaces tailored to client needs.
• Site Commissioning: Work as part of a team or independently oversee the commissioning of control systems at customer sites, ensuring seamless integration and optimal system performance.
• Functional Specifications: Draft detailed functional specifications that guide the design and implementation of control systems.
• Equipment Selection & Procurement: Evaluate and procure the necessary equipment for projects, ensuring functionality, quality, and cost-effectiveness.
• Shop Floor Collaboration: Work closely with shop technicians to address production challenges and implement effective solutions.
• Technical Guidance: Mentor junior engineers, providing technical guidance and oversight to ensure the delivery of high-quality designs and programming.
• Process Compliance: Ensure compliance with Altec’s processes, quality standards, and industry codes.
• Documentation & Reporting: Maintain clear documentation for all control system designs, software programs, and installation procedures. 
• Continuous Improvement: Contribute to the refinement of engineering processes to enhance efficiency and product quality.
  

What You’ll Bring

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma of Technology in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, Industrial Engineering or a related field.
• Minimum 3 years in the design, programming, and commissioning of discrete and/or motion control systems.
• Proficiency in PLC programming platforms such as Allen-Bradley, Beckhoff and Siemens
• Experience with AutoCAD, EPLAN for electrical design or equivalent software.

Nice to Have

• Professional Engineering (P.E..), EIT, Certified Engineering Technician (CET) designation 
• Working knowledge of UL508a, NFPA, CSA, ISO 13849 standards and related industrial regulations. 
• Experience in the lumber or wood industry, entertainment industry, and industrial process environment.
• Experience with motion control systems, functional safety and advanced automation applications.

Working Environment 

This is a full-time, on-site position based in Orlando, Florida with travel to customer locations across North America and internationally for project commissioning. Travel assignments may range from several days to months depending on project requirements. This role requires working in industrial and manufacturing environments, including extended periods of standing and walking as needed
