Position Overview

Reliance One, Inc. is seeking an innovative Applied Researcher to support cutting-edge research and development in quantum photonics and quantum communication technologies. This role will focus on designing, developing, and validating advanced quantum photonic devices and systems while contributing to groundbreaking research in quantum information science.

The ideal candidate will possess deep technical expertise in quantum systems, photonics, and optical engineering, along with a passion for experimental research, scientific discovery, and cross-functional collaboration. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to prototype development, intellectual property, and technical publications in a highly advanced research environment.

What You'll Be Doing

• Design and implement quantum photonic devices and components focused on quantum communication, single-photon generation, entanglement, and low-count measurement techniques.
• Design and integrate photonic components into larger subsystem architectures.
• Conduct advanced research on quantum information and quantum communication techniques, including squeezed light, quantum interference, and mode decomposition.
• Investigate novel applications of quantum technologies beyond traditional quantum information systems.
• Design and execute experiments to evaluate quantum photonic devices under varying environmental conditions, including temperature, vibration, and magnetic fields.
• Develop and support quantum information test benches, standardized calibration methods, and automated measurement systems.
• Develop, test, and integrate single-photon sources into larger quantum systems while optimizing overall system performance and quantum state fidelity.
• Analyze experimental data and communicate technical findings through reports, presentations, and scientific publications.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering and research teams to develop prototypes, intellectual property, and innovative technologies.
• Promote and support a strong workplace safety culture while adhering to laboratory safety procedures.

Qualifications – What You Bring (Must Haves)

• Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• Deep understanding of quantum systems, including entanglement, mode decomposition, nonlinear quantum state generation, and spin physics.
• Extensive knowledge of optical systems, including laser systems, optical design, free-space alignment, precision coupling, and photon detection.
• Hands-on experience with chip-scale photonics testing, precision fiber alignment, instrument synchronization, and experimental validation.
• Strong programming skills using Python, MATLAB, or similar languages for instrument control, automation, and data analysis.
• Excellent scientific writing and technical communication skills with the ability to present complex research using mathematical models, graphs, and technical documentation.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and experimental design capabilities.
• Ability to work effectively in collaborative, multidisciplinary research environments.

Preferred Qualifications (Added Bonus)

• Experience with integrated photonics design.
• Proficiency using Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) simulation tools such as Lumerical, COMSOL, or CST.
• Familiarity with high-speed electronics, PCB design, and optoelectronic packaging.
• Experience with nanofabrication processes including electron-beam lithography, etching, and related semiconductor fabrication techniques.
• Demonstrated history of technical publications, patents, or research contributions in quantum technologies.
• Experience developing research prototypes and transitioning concepts into applied technologies.
