Position Title 2026 Fall Tucson Roving Assistant Crew Leader – AmeriCorps Location 1443 W Prince Rd, Tucson, AZ 85705, United States Program Arizona Conservation Corps (AZCC) – AmeriCorps program that engages motivated young adults to complete challenging conservation and service projects across the western United States. Term Start: 08/24/2026 – End: 02/12/2027 (675 hours) Purpose AZCC crews serve in National Parks, National Forests, and other public areas performing projects such as trail construction & maintenance, habitat improvement, hazardous fuels reduction, historic preservation, invasive plant removal, and local environmental service projects. Duties Facilitate a positive crew member experience by setting an enthusiastic example during work and camp life. Work with the Crew Leader (CL) to communicate directions, project specifications, and constructive feedback throughout the term. Quickly adapt to serve multiple crews, moving from hitch to hitch as needed to fill gaps or split work. Assume management duties such as filling in for the CL or completing paperwork when required. Be prepared to serve as a permanent Assistant Crew Leader if any ACL resigns or is absent. Program Expectations Commitment: Participate fully in conservation projects, education, training, and other crew activities. Safety: Maintain a culture of safety, adhere to program policies, and foster well‑being on the crew. Professionalism: Follow all AZCC policies, maintain professional boundaries, and represent AZCC appropriately. Teamwork: Collaborate, respect others, and assist in group decision making. Technology: Use limited technology suitable for remote project locations. Substance Free: Refrain from alcohol and drugs while participating in the AZCC program. Qualifications United States citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident. At least 18 years of age. High school diploma or equivalent; if not completed, must obtain it before receiving the education award. Agree to provide information for eligibility verification and complete a National Service Criminal History Check. Preferred Qualifications Prior AmeriCorps service with experience in backpacking, wilderness travel, camp management, and outdoor leadership. Flexibility, adaptability, and a willingness to work a changing schedule, including potential deployment for national disaster relief. Strong communication, teaching/mentoring, conflict resolution, and team‑building skills. Valid driver’s license and an insurable driving record. Relevant bachelor’s degree. Commitment Serve from Tuesday to Tuesday, typically following an 8 days on / 6 days off hitch schedule. Half‑hour lunch breaks are not counted toward AmeriCorps service. Time off during hitches is not permitted; schedule accordingly. Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of the term. Three‑week break from December 9, 2026 – January 4, 2027; no project hitch or stipend during this period. Orientation & Training Receive orientation covering AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities. Training on Wilderness First Aid, Leave No Trace, outdoor living, crew culture, and goal setting. Instruction in specialized tool use (herbicide, crosscut saw, chainsaw) as needed. Informal training on tool maintenance, plant identification, and public land management agencies throughout the term. Benefits Segal AmeriCorps Education Award: $2,817.14 Living Allowance: $480 per week Additional Benefit: $195 per week Childcare Coverage if eligible Loan forbearance if eligible Interest Payments if eligible Housing AZCC is an independent, non‑residential program. Members supply their own outdoor gear and equipment (tent, sleeping bag, pad, pack, boots, etc.). A suggested gear list will be provided before the term begins. AZCC provides tools, personal protective gear, crew meal budget, and project transportation. Discounts on some outdoor gear brands are also available. Evaluation & Reporting Performance is evaluated based on completed hours, satisfactory completion of assignments, and meeting clearly communicated criteria. Reporting requirements include bi‑weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
