Accounting Assistant

Overview The Cosumnes Community Services District (the District) is seeking a full-time Accounting Assistant in the Office of the General Manager / Finance and Information Technology Division to join our team. Responsibilities Perform routine to complex administrative and technical account support duties related to accounts payable and accounts receivable, including posting, balancing, adjusting, and maintaining manual and computerized financial records according to established policies and procedures. Verify, code, reconcile, post, and record financial transactions; prepare and maintain databases and a variety of financial, accounting, and statistical reports; generate reports and balance them as needed. Reconcile accounts payable and receivable transactions with documentation; identify and resolve routine discrepancies; escalate non-routine discrepancies to the supervisor or appropriate staff. Assist with payroll transactions; code, verify, and post payroll timesheets; maintain payroll-related spreadsheets. Perform mathematical calculations; compute charges, interests, penalties, refunds, and other financial data. Organize administrative tasks and information from various sources; prepare reports, manuals, articles, announcements, and other materials as needed. Enter, compile, and retrieve data using standard word processing and spreadsheet software and accounting systems specific to the department. Maintain ledgers, registers, and journals; reconcile transactions and data; maintain accuracy of accounting records. Generate and assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial reports. Provide general office support and assist customers, departments, and employees with account information and issues; research transactions and update related files. Assist supervisors with special projects as required and perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Education and Training: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade. Advanced training or college-level coursework in accounting, finance, or closely related field is desirable. Experience: Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in financial and statistical record-keeping work. Knowledge of : Financial and account document processing and record-keeping including accounts receivable and accounts payable. Federal, State, and local laws, rules, and regulations pertinent to the area of assignment. Basic auditing and financial reconciliation procedures and techniques. Business arithmetic and basic financial and statistical techniques. Record-keeping principles and procedures. Modern office practices and computer software related to the work (word processing, spreadsheets, database). English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation. Customer service principles for interacting with the public, vendors, contractors, and District staff. Ability to : Perform detailed account and financial office support work accurately, independently, and timely. Audit financial and statistical data and resolve discrepancies. Interpret, apply, and explain policies and procedures. Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports. Enter and retrieve data with speed and accuracy; manage filing and tracking systems. Follow instructions and organize work to meet deadlines. Operate modern office equipment and software applications. Communicate effectively in writing and verbally; foster positive working relationships. Typical Working Conditions Work is typically performed in an indoor office environment. Occasional field work may occur in varying weather; travel to off-site locations within the District may be needed.
