Library Technical Assistant: Resource Sharing Specialist

$24 - $26.75 per hour

Position Full‑Time, Non‑Exempt (Twelve months), Full‑time (40 Hours) Position Code: 7850 Department/Administration: Armacost Library Salary Range: $24.00–$26.75 Hiring Range: Anticipated hiring range near or at the minimum of the classification, commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training. Availability: Immediately Overview Library Technical Assistants (LTAs) foster learning and community by connecting the University of Redlands community and visitors with information resources, space, programming, and services. LTAs supervise and direct student employees, oversee technical and daily operations, collaborate and coordinate with colleagues within and beyond the Library, and exercise discretion when working with people and managing situations that arise. The LTA Resource Sharing Specialist leads the daily operation of resource sharing and serves as the lead student supervisor. We welcome reliable, team‑oriented applicants who practice empathy and self‑reflection, cultivate diverse and inclusive working and learning spaces, and can adjust work schedules to the academic calendar. Flexibility to work evening and weekend hours is required. Duties and Responsibilities Resource Sharing Manage borrowing and lending requests across various resource sharing systems and cooperative efforts with other libraries. Interpret library e‑resource licensing agreements, comply with U.S. copyright law (Title 17, U.S. Code), and apply resource sharing best practices and guidelines to manage requests. Coordinate requests across University libraries. Research, verify, and troubleshoot bibliographic information. Provide access to free or open access resources when available. Assess cooperatives and library lending policies to optimize the duration of loans and reduce costs. Communicate with borrowers and lenders regarding overdue, lost, and recalled items, hearing lender priorities to maximize cost‑effective options for users. Explore alternative borrowing and lending technologies as needed. Compile and analyze borrowing and lending statistics. Lead Supervisor of Student Library Clerks Enrich the Library’s student employment experience through programming for student employees and supervisors. Coordinate with Student Employment to recruit and assess library clerks, taking disciplinary action when necessary. Coordinate the hiring, training, mentoring, and evaluation of library clerks with fellow student supervisors. Analyze and manage the student employment budget to ensure sufficient front‑desk coverage during operating hours. Develop and manage student employee work schedules. Create new and update existing documentation to equip library clerks to carry out their responsibilities. Analyze front desk data to assess library clerk performance. Oversee frontline services by student employees to students, faculty, staff, and the public; intervene when appropriate to address patron or student employee concerns. Engage with student colleagues to mentor their development through active listening, teachable moments, and accountability. Ensure that student colleagues are well versed on the Library website, policies and procedures, the Library of Congress classification system, and wayfinding. Design and manage work projects, create and updated workflows, that involve student colleagues in library initiatives and academic growth. Inform student colleagues about relevant news and developments in the Library and inform Library colleagues about news from student colleagues. Model empathy, respect, curiosity, and calm when responding to emergencies and patron issues. Collaborate with fellow supervisors of student employees to enable consistent oversight and performance expectations. Operations Oversee technical and daily operations that include circulation, management of patron accounts, first‑level reference assistance, stacks maintenance and missing items, data collection, opening and closing procedures. Conduct regular walk‑throughs to welcome library users, answer questions, and ensure that resources are functional; coordinate with IT Services, Facilities Management, Public Safety, and other units to maintain an environment conducive to learning. Contribute and implement ideas that welcome and engage library users. Manage expenditures to adhere to budget guidelines. Observe University and Library policies and procedures including Title IX guidelines, the Student Expression policy, and the Library’s Community Agreements. Draft and revise policy and procedure documentation. Conduct data analysis and reporting. Uphold patron privacy and other professional values. Engage in departmental initiatives, meetings, and projects. Practice flexibility and openness to the ideas and approaches of others. Exercise awareness, self‑reflection, and growth necessary for work with diverse populations. Qualification Guidelines Experience, Training, and Education One of the following combinations: Certificate in library science with two (2) years of recent, full‑time library or higher education work experience. Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) with one (1) year of recent, full‑time library work experience. Associate’s degree (or equivalent) with two (2) years of recent, full‑time library work experience. High school diploma (or equivalent) with four (4) years of recent, full‑time library work experience. Students near completion of their education requirements are also encouraged to apply so long as they fulfill the relevant requirements above. Demonstrated experience leading a team in a formal or informal capacity. Preferred Two (2) years of experience working in an academic library. Experience hiring, training, and supervising college or university student assistants. Experience with OCLC WMS, OCLC Tipasa, Springshare LibAnswers, Microsoft 365, Canva, and Canvas. Knowledge and Skills Comprehensive and in‑depth knowledge of library operations, technologies, and tenets such as intellectual freedom and privacy. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Detail‑oriented and strong organizational and administrative skills. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work successfully in a collaborative environment with people from culturally diverse backgrounds. Comprehensive knowledge of library databases, systems and resources, and trends in assigned functional areas, including expertise in search strategies. Ability to exercise judgement regarding copyright rights and responsibilities as they pertain to libraries. Expertise in relevant areas of a library’s integrated library system. Ability to participate in short‑ and long‑term planning through the collection, organization, analysis, and interpretation of data and information. Ability to perform conflict resolution with empathy and flexibility; familiar with de‑escalation techniques. Demonstrated skill with computers, software, and basic hardware (e.g., printers). Ability to interact with diverse populations, work independently within a framework of duties, and perform amidst interruptions and distractions. Ability to work independently, under high pressure during busy times, and when patron traffic is low. Proficient in the Library of Congress classification system, Microsoft 365. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions The position is an in‑person, student‑facing role with frequent interruptions and distractions. Duties are primarily performed in an office environment while sitting at a desk, using a computer workstation, and attending meetings. Minimum environmental controls are required to assay health and comfort. Physical Demands: Incumbents regularly sit or stand for long periods; walk each floor regularly; use hands and fingers to operate electronic devices; reach and carry items; climb stairs; speak clearly to answer phones; see to read fine print; hear and understand voices; push and maneuver carts; and lift, carry, and move objects weighing up to 30 pounds for distances up to 25 feet.
