Surgical Tech Extern - Lab CDL - Heart & Vascular Center

Job Summary

Provision of assistance to the operating room staff and to the needs of the physician in providing patient care under the supervision of a Clinical Nurse.
Key Note- All responsibilities and essential duties are performed under the direct supervision of a CAMC clinical preceptor.

Must be actively enrolled in a formalized training program for Surgical Technology.

Responsibilities
• Assist the operating room team by preparing the OR suite for surgical procedures in a timely manner.
• Practice aseptic and sterile techniques.
• Apply appropriate cleaning techniques in the operating room.
• Participate during the course of the procedure by handing instruments and supplies to the surgeon.
• Assist with applying the dressing to the incision.
• Clean and restock the room assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Patient Group Knowledge (Only applies to positions with direct patient contact)

The employee must possess/obtain (by the end of the orientation period) and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide developmentally appropriate assessment, treatment or care as defined by the department's identified patient ages. Specifically the employee must be able to demonstrate competency in: 1) ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of patient needs; 2) knowledge of growth and development; and 3) understanding of the range of treatment needed by the patients.

Competency Statement

Must demonstrate competency through an initial internship competency validation to independently perform tasks and additional duties as specified in the job description and the unit/department specific competency checklist.

10. Demonstrate base knowledge of A&P, medical terminology, microbiology and pharmacology.
11. Applies principles of sterile technique during procedures
