Physician, SCI/D, Outpatient Section Chief with EDRP/Recruitment/Relocation Incentive

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval – award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy) Education: Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic or osteopathic medicine Degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed Licensure: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia Residency training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification Approved residencies include those recognized by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) for the year the residency or fellowship was completed OR one year of post‑medical‑school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of independent practice under an unrestricted license in the United States OR non‑U.S. residency training followed by a minimum of three years of independent practice in the United States under an unrestricted license, with duties related to the position Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs who meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis; they are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged PRPs have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision; surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs In rare circumstances, the Facility Director may submit a memo to the VISN Director for reasonable exceptions to the residency training requirement when the applicant’s composite record warrants it Proficiency in spoken and written English Preferred experience: Competent physician who has completed a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Neurology, Family Medicine, or Internal Medicine Certification by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is preferred but not required Preferably, contributors in wound care, neurological conditions, SCI/rehab, medical care, education, and research suitable for an academic appointment, with leadership skills coordinating activity of ancillary staff, house staff, therapists, other rehabilitation professionals, and students Experience in wound management or managing and rehabilitating patients with functional disorders across the spectrum of rehabilitation illnesses is strongly preferred Demonstrates knowledge of preventive medicine and primary care as related to SCI/D (e.g., complications of disorders and treatment side effects) Experience working in a clinical or hospital environment – preferably a similar specialty or department Previous supervisory or managerial experience within healthcare settings Familiarity with healthcare administration, including scheduling, budgeting, and resource management Experience with quality assurance and improvement initiatives, ensuring compliance with healthcare standards and regulations Proven ability to lead and manage diverse teams, including staff training and performance evaluations Strong background in patient care and understanding patient needs and expectations Understanding of healthcare laws, regulations, and accreditation processes (e.g., HIPAA, JCAHO) Excellent verbal and written communication skills – essential for interacting with staff, patients, and stakeholders Competence in using healthcare information systems and electronic medical records (EMRs) Experience handling emergencies and crisis situations effectively Experience collaborating with a variety of healthcare professionals to foster a collaborative environment Skill in managing projects – including planning, execution, and evaluation within a healthcare context Reference: For more information on this qualification standard – Physical requirements: May require long periods of moderate lifting and carrying, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands, standing, walking, kneeling, bending, near vision correctable to 13–16 Inches or 20/40, color discrimination, and hearing (aids may be permitted) Duties Open continuous announcement, remaining open until May 8 2026 or until positions are filled Eligible applications will be referred at regular intervals or as vacancies occur VHA Physician Total Rewards package includes sign‑on bonus for highly qualified applicants, Education Debt Reduction Program benefits, competitive salary, annual performance bonus, and regular salary increases Paid time off: 50–55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, and up to 5 days paid absence for CME) Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5 % VA contribution Insurance: Federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long‑term care (many federal programs are portable into retirement) Licensure: One full and unrestricted license from any U.S. state or territory, or the District of Columbia; CME: Possible $1 000 per year reimbursement (must be full‑time with board certification) Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided Contract: No physician employment contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting Administrative duties: Leadership responsibilities – participation in staff meetings, hospital committees, peer‑review process, effective communication, and oversight of clinical processes HR duties: Maintain VA training requirements, document completion, and credential upkeep for privileging and re‑privileging Staff management: Participate in FPPE/OPPE process, ensure staff adherence to tour duties, and manage leave and clinical coverage via VISTA and CPRS surrogate Clinical management: Oversee open encounter & consult management, CPRS documentation, clinic procedures for scheduling, staff productivity, performance measures, and process‑improvement projects as directed by SCI/D Service Chief Supervise all outpatient physicians, providers, and SCI/D staff as assigned by the Chief SCI/D Service; report directly to the Chief SCI/D Service Clinical duties: The SCI/D Outpatient Section Chief is expected to remain privileged and practicing in their specialty field Patient care: Provide compassionate, appropriate, and effective care for health promotion, disease treatment, and end‑of‑life care Clinical knowledge: Demonstrate knowledge of biomedical, clinical, and social sciences and apply it to patient care and education Clinical judgment: Use scientific evidence to investigate, evaluate, and improve patient care Interpersonal & communication skills: Establish and maintain professional relationships with patients, families, and the health‑care team Professionalism: Demonstrate ethical practice, commitment to continuous professional development, respect for diversity, and responsible patient care Systems‑based practice: Apply understanding of healthcare contexts and systems to improve and optimize health care Provider responsibilities: Provide inpatient and consult service during off‑tours (nights, weekends, holidays) as needed by the organization Work with SCI/D Outpatient Assistant Nurse Manager to streamline clinic operations and maximize utilization and workflow efficiency for staff and veterans Ensure physician staff meet 80 % scheduling bookability and monitor productivity Work schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:30 am–4:00 pm #J-18808-Ljbffr U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
