Lead Journeyman Sheet Metal HVAC Foreman – Commercial Construction

Position Summary

The Lead Journeyman Sheet Metal HVAC Foreman is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising all field sheet metal and HVAC installation activities on commercial construction projects. This position provides hands-on leadership while ensuring work is completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with project plans, specifications, quality standards, and applicable codes. The Foreman serves as the primary field leader for sheet metal crews and works closely with the Project Manager, Superintendent, General Contractor, subcontractors, and inspectors.

Key Responsibilities

Field Leadership

● Lead and supervise sheet metal mechanics, apprentices, and laborers.

● Plan daily and weekly work activities to maximize productivity.

● Assign work based on crew experience and project priorities.

● Maintain a positive, professional, and accountable jobsite culture.

● Train and mentor apprentices and less experienced mechanics.

Installation

● Install commercial HVAC ductwork, equipment, and accessories.

● Interpret blueprints, specifications, shop drawings, and coordination drawings.

● Verify dimensions and field conditions before installation.

● Ensure installations comply with SMACNA standards, manufacturer requirements, and project specifications.

● Coordinate ductwork installation with piping, electrical, structural, and architectural trades.

Project Coordination

● Participate in project planning and scheduling meetings.

● Coordinate material deliveries and equipment staging.

● Communicate manpower needs to the Project Manager.

● Identify conflicts, design issues, and constructability concerns early.

● Assist with commissioning and project closeout activities.

Quality Control

● Ensure workmanship meets company quality standards.

● Perform routine inspections of completed work.

● Correct deficiencies promptly.

● Maintain accurate as-built information when field changes occur.

Safety

● Enforce OSHA regulations and company safety policies.

● Conduct daily safety meetings and job hazard analyses.

● Ensure proper use of PPE and fall protection.

● Report incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions immediately.

● Maintain a clean and organized jobsite.

Scheduling & Productivity

● Maintain production in accordance with project schedules.

● Identify schedule impacts before they become delays.

● Coordinate overtime or additional manpower when necessary.

● Monitor crew productivity and labor efficiency.

Documentation

● Complete daily reports.

● Track manpower hours.

● Document completed work.

● Record delays, weather impacts, and extra work.

● Assist with change order documentation.

Material & Equipment Management

● Verify material quantities upon delivery.

● Protect materials from damage and theft.

● Maintain company tools and equipment.

● Coordinate rental equipment needs.

● Minimize waste.

Customer Relations

● Represent the company professionally.

● Maintain positive working relationships with owners, architects, engineers, inspectors, and other trades.

● Resolve field issues professionally and promptly.

Minimum Qualifications

● Journeyman Sheet Metal License (where required).

● 7+ years commercial HVAC sheet metal installation experience.

● Minimum 3 years in a supervisory or foreman role preferred.

● Strong understanding of commercial HVAC systems.

● Ability to read blueprints and coordination drawings.

● Knowledge of SMACNA standards and applicable building codes.

● OSHA 30 certification preferred.

● Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.

● Ability to pass pre-employment screening.

● Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
