Maintenance Worker

Job Title

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of semi-skilled work in the repair, alteration, installation and maintenance of assigned District facilities, utilities and equipment.

Examples Of Duties

Perform a variety of construction and surface work in the repair, alteration, installation and maintenance of assigned District facilities, utilities and equipment; maintain routine records of work performed.

Operate a motor vehicle to haul and transport equipment, supplies and materials to and from District and vendor sites; operate a variety of machinery, including cement mixer, concrete saw, power saw, jackhammer and other equipment; operate welding and other specialized equipment as assigned.

Build and repair wood and chain fences; install and fabricate chain link and wooden fences and gates; dig holes, mix concrete, cut and cap poles, and stretch and wire fences.

Construct walls and related structures from cinder block, brick and other masonry products.

Form and prepare concrete slabs for a variety of projects; level and dig ground area and apply undersurfaces; mix, pour and finish concrete according to work order specifications.

Repair, install and maintain playground equipment; assemble, lay foundations and erect pipe structures and metal fittings as appropriate.

Construct ramps, walkways and steps using wood and metal forms.

Excavate asphalt and base materials; lay, spread, rake and roll asphalt surfaces to conform to original surface.

Remove and replace athletic fields and tracks; measure, lay out and match contour of original surface.

Reconstruct and clean storm drains, culverts and other drainage systems; assure proper connection of District systems to municipal drainage system; excavate and trench for the installation of underground utilities.

Assist other maintenance personnel in the performance of a variety of duties related to the building trades.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California Class C driver's license and a safe driving record.

Incumbent will be involved in field work which requires travel in a vehicle to various sites.

Oral Exam: Anticipated for the week of August 17, 2026.

Positions in this job classification typically work 40 hours/week for 12 months/year.

The duration of the eligibility list is 6 months unless extended by the Executive Director of Classified Human Resources and the Personnel Commission.

Benefits

Hayward Unified School District will provide a contribution of up to $2,500 per year to be used towards a District healthcare plan or cash in lieu of up to $1,350 per year. Full-time employees are required to purchase medical health benefits unless proof of alternate coverage is provided. Half-time and less than half-time employees may participate on a voluntary basis. The balance of health benefit costs are paid through a pre-tax payroll deduction. Dental coverage is provided free of charge for all employees working 20 hours per week, or more. Family coverage is available and any additional premium will be employee paid. Classified employees must participate in the CalPERS Retirement program. All employees are enrolled in an Employee Assistant Program (EAP). The District also offers various optional benefits including life insurance, short term disability, and a medical and dependent care flexible spending option.

Vacation: Following the completion of six (6) months of probationary service, employees will receive credit for five (5) working days of vacation. Every month thereafter, employees will accrue vacation at a rate of 5/6 of a working days (2 weeks per year).

Annual employees accrue vacation hours to be taken off at a later date. School year employees earn and are paid out vacation hours.

School Year employees receive fourteen (14) paid holidays, including all of the above except Juneteenth and 4th of July.

Sick Leave: Employees working the following number of days shall have the following amount of sick leave credited annually to their records at the beginning of the fiscal year, July 1.
