Schedule: Monday - Friday, 11:00 PM - 7:30 AM CST
Hours: 40 hours/week
Position Type: Contract

Job Summary:

The Specimen Technician I (SPT I) provides general support within the Specimen Processing Department. This position requires a strong data-entry background, attention to detail, accuracy, organization, and the ability to work efficiently in a production environment .

The role involves processing specimens for laboratory testing and learning different specimen types, test orders, and applicable compliance requirements. The position requires flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing daily priorities.

Key Responsibilities:

Perform general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department.
Perform A-station and presort activities.
Handle pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory.
Perform imaging/microfilming as required.
Perform centrifugation and aliquoting of specimens.
Accurately enter specimen and test-related information.
Learn and identify specimen types associated with various laboratory tests.
Follow specimen processing procedures, safety requirements, and compliance policies.
Maintain required productivity, quality, and completion-time standards .
Keep the work area clean and organized.
Communicate effectively with staff at all levels.
Demonstrate flexibility and adapt to changing requirements.
Work effectively while sitting or standing for extended periods.
Follow appropriate safety practices while working in a biohazard environment .

Required Qualifications:

High School Diploma or equivalent.
Basic understanding of computers.
Strong data-entry skills .
Ability to enter approximately 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour .
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Good organizational skills.
Ability to learn and understand specimen types and laboratory testing requirements.
Ability to work efficiently in a production/fast-paced environment.
Ability to follow safety and compliance policies and procedures.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to adapt to changing priorities.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous laboratory experience.
Previous specimen processing experience.
Medical or healthcare background.
Knowledge of medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory .
Previous hospital laboratory experience.
Previous production-environment experience.
