Building Inspector I (Plan Review)

Overview Position: Building Inspector (Plan Reviewer) in the City of Sacramento Building Division. The role involves reviewing construction plans, inspecting new buildings, alterations, and repairs to ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and standards. Responsibilities Review building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and roofing plans to confirm compliance with applicable codes. Inspect new construction, alterations, and repairs across various disciplines, including Building Specialty, Plumbing/Mechanical Specialty, Electrical Specialty, Roofing Combination, Residential Combination, Multi‑family Residential & Light Commercial Combination, Residential Combination & Structural, Non‑Structural Building, Plumbing/Mechanical Plan, and Electrical Plan. Issue permits, prepare and maintain reports, and address code violations. Coordinate with architects, engineers, contractors, and the public to explain requirements. Support project management activities such as contract administration and coordination of City or private projects. Conduct enforcement case management investigations for code deficiencies and coordinate corrective actions. Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. One year of experience in building inspection or a related municipal or county government agency OR three years of journeyman-level experience in construction (plumbing, electrical, carpentry, roofing) within the discipline(s) applied. Completion of 21 units of college-level courses in building inspection or a related field and certification by the ICC or other approved certifying organization OR one year experience in plan checking and inspections. Valid California Class C Driver License. Certification in the specific discipline(s) within one year of appointment. Ongoing certification maintenance required. Proficiency in reading and interpreting building plans and codes, use of the automated permit system, and basic computer skills. Additional Requirements Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting up to 50 pounds, working in confined spaces, and operating a vehicle. Work may require hours beyond standard schedule, including after‑hours, weekends, and holidays. Probationary period of 12 months.
