Job Summary A Police Officer performs responsible law enforcement functions as assigned, including enforcing federal and state laws and local ordinances related to public safety and welfare. Officers may participate in special programs and projects as assigned and report to the Sergeant. Minimum Training and Experience High school diploma or GED equivalent. State of Florida Certified Police Officer or proof of comparative compliance. All other applicants are considered non-certified. All applicants must pass all portions of the hiring process; placement on the Civil Service register prohibits re-application for one year. Essential Job Functions Respond to emergency or high-risk situations; participate in criminal and other investigations. Perform general law enforcement duties, including patrolling assigned areas, checking property for security, maintaining order and public safety, responding to traffic incidents, issuing citations, serving injunctions and other legal papers, apprehending and arresting suspects, questioning and interviewing witnesses and victims, assisting crime and accident victims, investigating alarms, processing crime scenes and collecting evidence, taking statements, etc. Participate in criminal/traffic investigations. Participate in special teams, programs and projects as assigned. Report all conditions that may affect community safety. Perform public service duties such as directing traffic at school crossings and special events, providing police escort, assisting stranded motorists, providing security at city events, and traffic control. Provide court testimony as required. Receive and respond to citizen inquiries and complaints, and refer the public to agencies that can provide further assistance. Promote crime prevention and safety theories and practices in the community. Plan or participate in safety and educational programs at local businesses, schools, community meetings, and events. Promote favorable public relations and community relations. Assist with new officer training as assigned. Maintain assigned vehicles and equipment. Work under stressful, high-risk conditions. Stay updated on federal, state laws, city ordinances, and required training. Rotate to various positions such as Detective, Training Officer, DARE Officer, Community Police Officer, Crime Prevention / Community Programs Officer, K-9 Handler as assigned. Prepare and submit various records and reports: incident reports, citations, work orders, daily activity sheets, observation reports, logs, memos, etc. Operate police vehicle, bicycle or motorcycle; use police radar, firearms, chemical and impact weapons, restraints, two-way radio, camera, and other police equipment, as well as computer, telephone, calculator, etc. Interact and communicate with various groups and individuals: supervisors, police chief, other department personnel, city officials, court personnel, attorneys, local and federal law enforcement, emergency responders, medical personnel, community leaders, suspects, victims, witnesses, and the general public. Tests and Assessments Required Applicants must pass a basic aptitude test, a physical agility test, a swimming test, a background examination, and a video assessment. The following tests are required by the State of Florida for all applicants seeking to become law enforcement officers. The requirements must be completed prior to submitting an application. The Agility and Swim tests are administered by Broward College Institute for Public Safety Criminal Justice Testing Center. The Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test is administered by FDLE/Pearson VUE. To register for these required pre-application tests through Broward College’s Criminal Justice Training Center, you must register online. Citizen of the United States at time of application. High school graduate from an accredited high school or GED. Possess a valid Florida Driver's License by time of employment. Good moral character. No felony convictions. Not have committed acts of violence. Not dishonorably discharged from the military. Pass background investigation. Pass physical examination and drug screening. Pass psychological screening. Possess FDLE certificate or proof of comparative compliance (if certified). Complete and submit personal history questionnaire. Pass B-PAD (Behavioral Personal Assessment Device) video assessment. Achieve passing score on the C.J.B.A.T (Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test). #J-18808-Ljbffr
