Purpose: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development. Responsibilities A. MAJOR FUNCTION: Management of Instructional Time The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment for each lesson ready at the start of the lesson or instructional activity; gets the class started quickly; gets students on task quickly at the beginning of each lesson; maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task. B. MAJOR FUNCTION: Management of Student Behavior The teacher has established a set of rules and procedures that govern routine administrative matters, verbal participation, talk during different types of activities, and movement in the classroom; frequently monitors behavior, stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently, yet maintains student dignity. C. MAJOR FUNCTION: Instructional Presentation The teacher begins lesson or instructional activity with a review of previous materials; introduces the lesson and specific learning objectives; speaks fluently; presents using concepts and language understandable to students; provides examples and demonstrations; assigns tasks with high success rates; asks appropriate levels of questions; conducts activities at a brisk pace; makes smooth transitions; summarizes main points at the end. D. MAJOR FUNCTION: Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance The teacher maintains clear, firm and reasonable work standards and due dates; circulates during class work to check performance; uses oral, written, and other work products to check progress; poses questions clearly and one at a time. E. MAJOR FUNCTION: Instructional Feedback The teacher provides feedback on in‑class work to encourage growth; provides prompt feedback on assigned out‑of‑class work; affirms correct oral responses; provides sustaining feedback after incorrect responses or no responses. F. MAJOR FUNCTION: Facilitating Instruction The teacher has an instructional plan aligned with school and system‑wide curricular goals; uses diagnostic information to develop and revise objectives and tasks; maintains accurate records; uses resources to support the instructional program. G. MAJOR FUNCTION: Interacting Within the Educational Environment The teacher treats all students fairly, interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and community. H. MAJOR FUNCTION: Performing Non‑Instructional Duties The teacher carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned or needed; adheres to laws, policies, rules, and regulations; follows a professional development plan and demonstrates growth. Performs additional related work as required. Minimum Training and Experience Degree in education or in a related area that will qualify for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Qualifications Physical Requirements: Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools; must be able to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects with negligible force; physical requirements are consistent with Light Work. Data Conception: Ability to compare and/or judge characteristics of data, people, or things. Interpersonal Communication: Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey information; includes receiving instructions. Language Ability: Ability to read various reports, handbooks, forms, lists; prepare correspondence and instructional materials using prescribed format. Intelligence: Apply logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw conclusions; interpret technical instructions. Verbal Aptitude: Record and deliver information; explain procedures; follow instructions; communicate effectively in professional languages. Numerical Aptitude: Use mathematical formulas; add, subtract, multiply, divide; apply statistical principles. Form/Spatial Aptitude: Inspect items for proper length, width, shape. Motor Coordination: Coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office equipment. Manual Dexterity: Handle various items such as office equipment and hand tools. Color Discrimination: Differentiate between colors and shades. Interpersonal Temperament: Deal with people beyond instructions; adaptable under stress or emergencies. Physical Communication: Talk and hear; communicate via telephone. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to constantly monitor safety and well‑being of students, particularly in inclusive activities. Ability to motivate students. Ability to maintain a clean and orderly environment; perform general clerical duties. Ability to maintain order and discipline in a classroom. Ability to operate common office machines. Ability to maintain basic files and records. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as needed.
