Managing Director, People and Site Operations

Number of Positions: 1. Compensation: $95,000.00 - $105,000.00 Annually Commensurate with Experience and Location. Work Location: Hybrid On-Site/Remote. Position Overview The Managing Director, People and Operations (MDPOps) will serve as CY Denver’s main owner of site culture and operational practices to drive outcomes and people satisfaction. This site leader works closely with the Senior Vice President/Executive Director to execute CY Denver’s strategic plan and is a member of the site’s Senior Leadership Team (SLT). The MDPOps will work collaboratively with the Managing Director of Impact and Managing Director of Development to ensure the site is engaging in ways that align to organizational values, traditions, and aspirations. The MDPOps will lead the day-to-day operations and local AmeriCorps Member recruitment for the site and play a critical role in ensuring staff and AmeriCorps Members (ACMs) have the necessary tools and resources to drive student impact and ACM experience. The MDPOps reports to the Executive Director and this is a hybrid role. Job Description College degree or equivalent education and work experience required 5-7 years of experience successfully leading cross-functional teams, managing Human Resources/people work, and leading strategic operations Authorized documentation to work in the United States of America Demonstrated ability to lead directors and managers in the creation and implementation of multi-faceted operating plans and budgets Proven success in developing collaborative relationships, coaching, and interactive trainings with clear outcomes for adult learners Strong passion for and commitment to City Year’s mission of delivering high impact service to children and schools; developing young adults participating in national service; promoting and advancing the concept of voluntary national service; belief in youth as agents of social change Responsibilities People Strategy Team and Learning Culture - Partner with the Executive Director, lead a data-driven and best-practice informed strategy to foster a joyous and intentional staff culture, including professional development and staff engagement initiatives. Workforce Planning - Partner with Executive Director to develop strategic workforce planning initiatives, including staff professional development plan, succession planning map, and staffing structure adjustments as needed. Staff Engagement – Continuously innovate plan for engaging staff team of 10-12 and annual AmeriCorps Member cohort of 40-60; cultivate an informed community by partnering with Executive Office to deliver clear and transparent internal communications and trainings on key topics; facilitate new staff trainings related to operations, finance and technology; in partnership with Senior Leadership, facilitate whole team retreats and Village meetings. Talent Acquisition and Onboarding – Develop strategies to seek and develop new partnerships for sourcing talent; lead department staff to facilitate full local hiring and onboarding processes, resulting in effective and timely hires; with input from and in partnership with the hiring manager, plan and execute onboarding and orientation plans for new team members. Employee Relations - Partner with City Year Headquarters and local staff to investigate and address grievances, concerns or misconduct or accommodation requests of staff or Student Success Coaches; coach and support staff managers in performance improvement plans, coaching plans, and terminations Administration and Compliance - Ensure all org-wide policies are executed at the local level; ensure that federal, state, local, and partner district policies are followed and that all background checks are conducted and monitored appropriately. Comp and Benefits Liaison – serve as lead site liaison to City Year Headquarters on local matters related to compensation and benefits; Cultivate local incentive and reward sources that compliment CY Denver benefits. AmeriCorps Member Support and Recruitment AmeriCorps Member Local Recruitment - build out and execute a local ACM recruitment strategy. This role may have one direct report within the next 12 months, the Community Partnerships Manager, who will support with designing and executing the local recruitment strategy. Support ACMs with understanding and navigating City Year benefits and HR policies and resources. Ensure successful implementation of Corps Experience elements including uniform management, bus passes, pantry, public benefits, relocation payments, and temporary housing efforts. Lead and plan high-impact Corps events such as Registration, Opening Day, MLK Jr Day, Graduation, and other all-site events including logistics, vendors, run‑of‑show, and communication workflows; assist with annual Rock the Red Jacket fundraising event as needed. Budget and Finance Annual Budget Planning - Lead annual budget design process and ensure all deadlines are met for HQ reporting and the annual planning and budgeting process. Financial Forecasting – Partner with Executive Directors to serve as CY Denver’s points of contact for the national finance team on matters of financial reporting, financial forecasting, capital purchasing, and long‑term financial planning. Division Budgets - Collaborate with Executive Director and SLT to prepare zero‑based program and school team budgets, lead quarterly and annual report‑back process, and ensure budget alignment with strategy and donor intent. Vendor Contracting and Invoice Processing - Serve as lead on processing invoices, submitting contracts, and bulk orders of supplies and materials. Site Operations Lead efficient and positive operational impact of City Year Denver site. Site Technology – Co‑design the strategy for site technology investments with site and headquarters staff; collaborate on resourcing strategies to fund technology investments; lead site AI learning and integration in collaboration with national headquarters; track assets as required. Safety - Partner with City Year Headquarters and local staff to address safety, health, and emergency crisis concerns; support the integration and implementation of all local and state safety requirements into office policies and procedures. Facility Management – Assess and continuously improve all office workspace policies, procedures, and systems, including flexible work policies; collaborate with relevant staff to fund office investments; serve as site lead for property management and partnership with Moonshot and other co‑located partners, ensuring that City Year Denver is an exemplary tenant. Executive Office and Sitewide Support Initiatives Create agenda for SLT meetings in coordination with Executive Director. Collaborate with the Executive Director and Board Chair on planning and communication for the annual board retreat, board meeting agendas, and other board engagement events, including Connect‑Give‑Engage conversations. Works with all site teams to ensure effective, smooth support and collaboration for site‑wide events Support Executive Director with calendar management, meeting coordination, and external communications. Lead on special projects as assigned by Executive Director. Preferred Qualifications City Year/AmeriCorps or experience with local and national community service is a plus Professional HR certification a plus (SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP; PHR or SPHR) Background in human resources, finance, and/or operations Strong technical acumen and ability to utilize multiple technology platforms, as well as coach others towards utilization/interpretation Proven success in developing talent through performance plans,reviews,and leadership opportunities Experience supporting and engaging members of a Board of Directors is a plus Expertise in Microsoft Suite and Workday is a plus Competencies In order to succeed in this role, an applicant must have the following competencies: Collaboration: Connects with stakeholders to identify shared interests; partners with others to incorporate different perspectives toward a common goal. Physical requirements Ability to sit for extended periods and occasionally stand or walk Manual dexterity for typing, writing, and handling office equipment Visual acuity to read screens and printed materials Hearing ability to participate in conversations and respond to phone calls Occasional lifting or carrying of items up to 10–20 lbs (e.g., office supplies) Ability to communicate clearly in person, by phone, virtually through platforms like Teams, and in writing Working Conditions Operates in a professional, shared office setting using standard office equipment. May require occasional travel to community events and service sites. Typical schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with occasional extended hours as needed. Noise level is generally quiet. Requires a valid driver’s license for travel as part of job duties. Must have reliable internet access for remote or flexible work arrangements. Compensation Compensation: $95,000 to $105,000 annually commensurate with experience. This is a full‑time exempt role.
