SUMMARY

The Pulliam Center for International Education is the hub of international activity at Queens University of Charlotte. As Queens University of Charlotte and Elon University move toward a shared future as a merged institution, the Pulliam Center works in close partnership with Elon’s Isabella Cannon Global Education Center (GEC) and other colleagues across both institutions to advance an integrated vision for global education, international student support, and global engagement.

The Assistant Director for International Student Services leads the operational management of all services and support programs on the Queens Charlotte campus. This position holds primary responsibility for SEVIS compliance and F-1 student advising, supervises a student worker/GA, and oversees enrollment management and retention initiatives for international students. Strategic direction and institutional compliance policies are set in coordination with leadership in the Pulliam Center and GEC.

This position is exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is not eligible to earn overtime pay or compensatory time off for additional hours worked. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESImmigration Compliance & Student Advising

• Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) for SEVIS and the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP); serve as Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) when designated.
• Issue and maintain I-20s and SEVIS records to ensure institutional compliance with all reporting requirements.
• Advise international students on visa status, employment authorization, financial regulations, taxes, and cultural adjustment.
• Manage complex immigration cases; liaise with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Department of State, Social Security Administration, and sponsoring agencies.
• Develop and maintain advising resources and deliver educational programs related to immigration and student success topics.
• Ensure the university remains in compliance with all SEVP requirements; escalate compliance concerns.
• Serve as a day-to-day point of contact for international students, providing referral and advising support on personal, cultural, and academic adjustment matters.
• Manage student records, data, and communications in relevant systems to support institutional compliance and student success tracking.
• Collaborate with colleagues across Queens University of Charlotte and Elon University to support the development of integrated international education programs, services, and student support initiatives.

Enrollment Management & Retention

• Collaborate with Admissions, Financial Aid, and other campus partners to support the recruitment, enrollment, and retention of international students.
• Serve as a resource to campus offices on matters related to international student support and success.

Programming & Student Support

• Plan and execute international student arrival and orientation each Fall and Spring semester, including logistics, communications, programming, and materials preparation.
• Plan and execute cultural, educational, and social programs and events for the international student population, including opportunities for students to connect with each other and with the broader Charlotte community.
• Plan and execute promotional activities for international student programs and services, including in-person presentations, classroom visits, tabling events, and social media promotion.
• Ensure students have access to resources for tax reporting obligations, including oversight of ITIN and Sprintax programming.
• Liaise with university offices, student organizations, and community organizations to connect international students with resources and opportunities.
• Represent the institution as needed and requested at student orientation, enrollment events, or other similar events where international student services should have representation.

Social Media & Communications

• Own the social media presence and communications strategy for international student services, including maintaining PCIE ISS social media accounts and setting content priorities.
• Supervise and direct the student worker/GA in the execution of social media content creation, scheduling, and engagement for ISS programs and events.
• Ensure consistent, accurate, and welcoming communications to current and prospective international students across all channels.

Supervision

• Supervise a student worker or graduate assistant, directing their work in support of ISS operations and social media.
• Provide mentorship and regular check-ins to ensure the student worker or graduate assistant is supported and gaining meaningful professional experience.
• Collaborate with colleagues across Queens University of Charlotte and Elon University to support the development of integrated international education programs, services, and student support initiatives..

Non-Essential Duties: Other duties and special projects may be assigned to meet department and/or university needs.

Experience, Knowledge & Skills Required

• Minimum 3 years of experience in international student services or a closely related field.
• Solid understanding of F-1 visa regulations and SEVIS compliance requirements.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident (required for DSO designation).
• Commitment to and understanding of the unique needs of international students.
• Skilled at working collaboratively and effectively with diverse populations.
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a high-volume environment.
• Ability to research and accurately analyze complex information including government regulations.
• Proven ability to safeguard sensitive and confidential information; FERPA knowledge preferred.
• Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution required.

Experience, Knowledge & Skills Preferred

• Master’s degree from an accredited institution.
• Experience as a Designated School Official (DSO).
• Experience supervising staff or student employees.
• Proficiency in at least one language other than English.
• Familiarity with IRS regulations as applied to international students.
• Experience with enrollment management or student retention initiatives.
