Schedule: PRN position that can fulfill day and evening as well as 8 on calls a month, on call goes from M-F 4:00 pm to 11 pm Saturday 7am to 11pm split shift for on call.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Under general supervision, the Nuclear Medicine Technologist performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures using radiopharmaceuticals. This role involves preparing and administering radioactive drugs, operating imaging equipment, and ensuring patient safety throughout the imaging process. The technologist collaborates with physicians and other healthcare professionals to provide accurate diagnostic information and support effective treatment planning.
- Demonstrates basic clinical competency in nuclear medicine technology across all locations and patient populations. Prepares and administers radiopharmaceuticals and adjunctive medications to perform patient imaging procedures. Provides images, data analysis, and patient information for diagnostic interpretation. Selects appropriate technical factors on an individual patient basis and demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care.
- Participates in departmental and organizational performance improvement initiatives designed to enhance workflows, patient experience, quality, safety, and operational efficiency. Actively participates in student and employee training and educational activities. Assists with research projects and clinical trials involving nuclear medicine procedures and technologies.
- Maintains a clean, safe, and prepared work environment, including cleaning and preparing the hot lab and patient rooms. Maintains supplies and inventory within the assigned area. Receives, manages, and disposes of radioactive waste in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Ensures radiation safety precautions are followed at all times.
- Verifies physician orders, patient preparation, and the reason for the examination to ensure the appropriate imaging protocol is selected. Communicates effectively with patients to obtain medical histories, answer questions, and explain procedures to promote patient understanding and comfort. Processes examinations for physician interpretation.
- Ensures the proper maintenance and operation of equipment by performing quality control procedures and promptly reporting equipment or environmental issues.
- Provides patient education and support, including preparing patients for procedures and addressing physical and psychological needs. Escalates concerns through appropriate channels as needed.
- Prioritizes patient flow and coordinates care through consistent and effective communication with patients, families, and the healthcare team. Documents patient care activities in electronic health record systems and distributes final images to the PACS and nuclear medicine systems in a timely manner for interpretation.
- Consistently acts and communicates professionally, embodying the organization's SPIRIT values and fostering a respectful and supportive environment for patients, families, and colleagues. Adheres to the ARRT Standards of Ethics.
- Applies knowledge of nuclear medicine principles and practices, including anatomy and physiology, radiation safety, radiation physics, quality assurance, patient positioning, and patient care. Ensures the safe storage, handling, and administration of radiopharmaceuticals. Adheres to Joint Commission, state, federal, and departmental regulatory and compliance standards.
Qualifications
Education
- Associate's degree required; or
- Graduation from a certificate or advanced-degree program in Nuclear Medicine accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) required.
Experience
- Prior work experience not required.
Licenses and Certifications
- Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist (CNMT) through the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) required upon hire; or
- Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Nuclear Medicine [ARRT(N)] required upon hire.
- Licensed Nuclear Medicine Technologist or Licensed Radiologic Technologist in the applicable state (Maryland or Virginia, outpatient locations only), if applicable, required upon hire.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required upon hire.
