Salary Range $27.00 - $32.00 Hourly Position Type Full Time Administrative Faculty
Description
The Northwest School is an independent day and boarding school serving students in grades 6–12 on an urban campus in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood. We provide an interdisciplinary liberal arts education that nurtures compassionate, globally aware, and environmentally conscious individuals who find joy in learning and are prepared to contribute to an interconnected world.
Position Summary
We are seeking a Facilities Maintenance Technician to join our collaborative Facilities team and help maintain a safe, welcoming, and well-functioning campus for our students, employees, and visitors.
This is a hands-on position with a wide variety of responsibilities, from routine building maintenance and repairs to campus setup, preventative maintenance, and responding to day-to-day facilities needs. Candidates do not need to be experts in every trade. We welcome applicants with general maintenance experience, strong mechanical aptitude, and an interest in learning and expanding their skills.
The Facilities team maintains our one-acre Capitol Hill campus, which includes six buildings and multiple outdoor spaces. The Facilities Maintenance Technician reports to the Director of Facilities and works closely with other members of the Facilities team, school employees, and outside vendors.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general building maintenance and minor repairs, including basic plumbing, electrical, drywall, painting, carpentry, fixture, and lighting work.
- Respond to work orders and facilities requests, prioritizing assignments based on urgency, safety, and operational needs.
- Conduct routine campus inspections and identify maintenance, cleanliness, or safety concerns requiring attention.
- Help keep campus grounds and building exteriors clean, safe, and welcoming, including removing litter, graffiti, stickers, leaves, snow, and ice as needed.
- Assist with preventative maintenance and minor building improvement projects.
- Troubleshoot common facilities issues and either complete repairs or help determine when specialized vendor support is needed.
- Assist with clearing clogged drains and addressing other routine plumbing issues.
- Build, assemble, install, or repair simple furnishings, shelving, fixtures, and equipment.
- Move and arrange furniture, equipment, appliances, and other materials as needed.
- Support school events by setting up and breaking down furniture, equipment, and spaces.
- Respond promptly to spills, leaks, safety concerns, and other unexpected facilities needs.
- Assist with opening campus buildings, including disarming security systems and unlocking designated spaces.
- Use appropriate signage and safety procedures when performing work that may affect students, employees, or visitors.
- Maintain accurate and timely updates in the school's work-order management system.
- Work collaboratively with Facilities team members and outside vendors on maintenance and campus improvement projects.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
What We're Looking For
We are looking for someone who is dependable, service-oriented, and enjoys solving problems and working with their hands. The successful candidate will be comfortable working independently while also being an active member of a small, collaborative team.
Ideal candidates will bring:
- General building maintenance, facilities, construction, handyman, or related experience.
- Basic knowledge of one or more areas such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, drywall, or general repair—or a demonstrated willingness and ability to learn.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to organize and prioritize multiple work requests.
- A collaborative, responsive, and customer-service-oriented approach.
- Ability to work respectfully and professionally in a school environment around students and employees.
- Comfort using basic technology to receive, track, and document work assignments.
- Ability to safely meet the physical requirements of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
The Northwest School fosters a warm, inclusive community grounded in our school values. We believe a diverse community strengthens our institution and makes it more creative and dynamic. We strongly encourage candidates from historically underrepresented backgrounds to apply.
Qualifications
We are looking for a dependable, collaborative, and service-oriented professional who enjoys hands-on work, solving problems, and contributing to a school community.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience in facilities, building maintenance, construction, property maintenance, or a related field. We welcome candidates with a combination of relevant work experience and demonstrated hands-on skills.
- Basic experience with one or more building trades—such as carpentry, drywall, painting, plumbing, HVAC, or electrical work—and a willingness to learn in other areas.
- Ability to troubleshoot routine maintenance issues and determine when additional assistance or specialized expertise is needed.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Strong communication, organization, and customer-service skills.
- Comfort using email and basic computer systems to receive and document work assignments.
- Ability to safely lift and move up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Valid driver's license and ability to meet the school's driving requirements.
- Ability to work professionally and positively in a school environment serving students ages 11–18.
- Commitment to The Northwest School's mission and to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and welcoming community.
Candidates do not need to be experienced in every building trade. We are interested in applicants who bring a solid foundation in general maintenance, good judgment, reliability, and an interest in continuing to learn and develop their skills.
Compensation & Benefits
Hourly wage: $27–$32 per hour, depending on experience. This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week position.
The Northwest School offers a comprehensive benefits and time-off package for full-time employees, including:
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance with employee-only coverage fully paid by the school.
- Employer-paid short- and long-term disability and life and accident insurance.
- 403(b) retirement plan with an employer match of up to 6% after one year of service.
- 10 vacation days, 12 sick days, 2 personal days, and approximately 15 paid holidays.
- Lunch and access to the school's on-site fitness facility.
- Professional development opportunities.
- A collaborative, mission-focused work environment on our urban Capitol Hill campus.
