Assistant Fire Marshal - Fire Hazard Abatement

Assistant Fire Marshal – Fire Hazard Abatement Apply by the deadline to be considered for an onboarding event. The San Bernardino County Fire Protection District Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) is recruiting for an Assistant Fire Marshal–Fire Hazard Abatement. This role plans, organizes, supervises, and coordinates the activities and staff engaged in fire hazard and weed abatement enforcement program; oversees field inspections, investigations, enforcement actions, and abatement operations to ensure compliance with applicable fire hazard abatement ordinances and other related regulations. Key Responsibilities Supervise Fire Hazard Abatement Operations: Direct, train, and evaluate staff conducting inspections, investigations, enforcement actions, and hazard abatement activities while ensuring compliance with safety standards and District procedures. Manage Compliance and Enforcement Programs: Plan, coordinate, and oversee fire hazard abatement programs, field inspections, investigations, and enforcement activities to ensure adherence to fire codes, ordinances, regulations, and County policies. Oversee Complex Cases and Public Safety Responses: Investigate and resolve sensitive or escalated enforcement matters, respond to urgent public safety concerns, and conduct inspections of complex fire hazard cases as needed. Coordinate with Agencies and Contractors: Collaborate with contractors, utility companies, law enforcement, government agencies, and other stakeholders to facilitate effective hazard abatement and ensure compliance with contractual and regulatory requirements. Develop Programs and Administrative Processes: Create and implement policies, procedures, training materials, operational guidelines, budgets, and performance measures to support program effectiveness and resource management. Monitor Program Performance and Reporting: Review reports, case files, and documentation; analyze operational data; prepare administrative and statistical reports; and track compliance, enforcement trends, and program outcomes. Lead Community Engagement and Staff Development: Conduct public outreach and presentations, address stakeholder concerns, participate in personnel decisions, and provide leadership, coaching, and performance management for assigned staff. Provide Operational Support: Establish work priorities, manage inspection schedules and workloads, respond to field needs, travel to remote locations as required, and provide temporary relief coverage when necessary. Conditions of Employment Pre‑Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must undergo a background check, which includes fingerprinting and a medical exam. License: A valid California Class C Driver License is required. Proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained. Work Hours: Overtime, weekends, and/or holidays may be required. Physical: Incumbents frequently bend, stoop, kneel, work on rough and uneven terrain, and are subject to extreme climates. Sponsorship: San Bernardino County cannot consider candidates who require Visa Sponsorship. Candidates must be able to present their legal right to work in the United States. Experience Three (3) years of experience enforcing, investigating, and interpreting code and ordinance violations related to fire hazard abatement, vegetation management, arboriculture, wildfire prevention, public nuisance abatement, or closely related field. Experience must include enforcing fire hazard or safety regulations, and conducting inspections, with at least one (1) year in a lead or senior‑level role. Substitution: A Bachelor's degree in fire science/technology, forestry, natural resource management, conservation, inspection/construction technology, or a closely related field, or certifications in Wildland Fire Behavior (S‑190, S‑290), Fire Fighter Type 1 Training, or NFPA Wildfire Mitigation Specialist may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience. Ideal Candidate Strong leadership, communication, and public outreach skills. Ability to work collaboratively with agencies, landowners, and community members. Familiarity with local and state fire prevention strategies and environmental regulations. NFPA Certified Wildfire Mitigation Specialist Certification. NFPA Wildfire Hazard Assessment: Home Ignition Zone. CAL FIRE Defensible Space Inspector Training Certificate. Wildland Fire Behavior S‑190 and S‑290. Examination Procedure There will be a competitive evaluation of qualifications based on the information provided in the application and supplemental questionnaire.
