FIRE CHIEF, CORRECTIONAL FACILITY
Salary: $8,770.00 – $11,039.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or the minimum of the alternate range when applicable. Final Filing Date: 6/23/2026 Work Location: High Desert State Prison, Susanville, CA. Telework: None. Permanent, Full‑time. Key Responsibilities Plan, organize, and direct fire prevention, suppression, education, and safety training programs for the institution. Directly supervise Fire Captains and Hazardous Material Specialists; indirectly supervise incarcerated firefighter staff. Manage mutual and automatic aid agreements with outside fire and other governmental agencies. Serve as Safety Officer of the prison and chair the institution Safety Committee. Assume command during emergencies (firefighting, rescue, evacuation, medical response) with assistance from all prison personnel. Review and revise operational plans annually. Supervise the Hazardous Waste Program and oversee hazardous material handling. Preside over safety committee meetings; conduct required environment, health, safety, and sanitation inspections; monitor compliance with fire & life‑safety regulations; investigate unsafe conditions. Provide leadership and training to ensure adequate fire protection and prevention across the facility. Minimum Qualifications Education, experience, and certifications as specified in the Class Specification (see attached Duty Statement). Eligibility to serve as a Fire Chief in a correctional facility. Must be able to assume emergency command responsibilities.
