DEPUTY SHERIFF TRAINEE
The Orange County Sheriff's Department is currently accepting applications for the Deputy Sheriff Trainee position. The upcoming exam date is Saturday, July 11, 2026. Applications may be accepted until the recruitment closes, which can happen any day at 11:59 P.M. Recruitment Overview This recruitment is designed to establish an open eligible list that will be used to fill future vacancies in this class and may also be used to fill positions in similar or lower classifications within the County of Orange. Incumbents will be periodically rotated through assignments and shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and correctional/court facilities. A Deputy Sheriff Trainee is required to attend and satisfactorily complete the 28‑week P.O.S.T. Certified Orange County Sheriff's Regional Training Academy. Successful completion of the academy results in promotion to Deputy Sheriff I. The department emphasizes intelligence‑led policing and community‑focused service. Minimum Qualifications Read, understand, interpret, and apply departmental policies, rules, laws, and ordinances related to law enforcement work. Write clear and comprehensive reports. Establish and maintain effective relationships with others. Understand and carry out oral and written directions. Learn to use and maintain firearms safely and proficiently. Education and Experience Graduation from high school or satisfactory completion of a General Education Development (G.E.D.) test, California High School Proficiency Test, or attainment of a two‑year or four‑year degree from an accredited college or university. License/Certification Possession of a valid California Driver License by date of appointment. Special Requirements Be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law. Be at least 20½ years old at time of application and at least 21 years of age by date of appointment. Not have been convicted of a felony and not otherwise subject to disqualification under California Government Code Section 1029. Be found free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition that might adversely affect the exercise of peace officer powers, as determined by a licensed examining authority in accordance with California Government Code Section 1031. Pass a background investigation conducted in compliance with California Government Code 1031, to the satisfaction of the Sheriff‑Coroner Department. Physical, Mental and Environmental Requirements Incumbents will work inside jail facilities and may have contact with inmates who can become violent or abusive. Incumbents may be required to drive in inclement weather and work shifts, holidays, weekends, and rotating schedules. Physical Requirements Independent body mobility to stand, stoop, twist, and bend. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and drag a 165 lb. mannequin; climb ladders, scaffolds, and a 6‑foot wall. Ability to sit and stand for prolonged periods. Clear speech and hearing for personal conversation, phone communication, and addressing large groups. Vision sufficient to read standard text, computer screens, and oversee large groups of inmates. Eligible List After all selection procedures, an open eligible list of qualified candidates will be established.
